Based on what? Did you check with Hasselblad USA before you wrote this?

From the link BrianShaw posted in #23 above.

Also important might be what's not listed as it implies that they are still servicable by Hasselblad. A call or email might be more definitive on those products. Perhaps Pieter has already done that???

Based on what a great job they did with my Nikon FtN Photomic, I am sending my 501C/M to ICT for a long awaited overhaul. I bought the camera new 25+ years ago and its never been serviced, but it's time.

I recommend and use both Samy's Camera on Fairfax and KEH.com.

Hasselblad will not accept a camera for service if they don't have the parts to repair it. Since they don't know what it might need, they take the safe route of just not accepting those cameras.

ICT did a minor miracle on my Nikon FtN Photomic meter and body. They also have extensive 'Blad experience and do a full teardown for CLA, rather than just minor tweaks. So... my 501C/M is en route to them as we speak for a full overhaul and CLA.

I received an email from KEH yesterday, they're going to look it over and get back to me. Hopefully it's straightforward and doesn't need unobtainium.

This depends a lot on the repair facility doing the work. Everyone has their own pile of parts. Barn Owl had a lot of parts, though I have no idea where they're going to go now that the owner has passed.

Before I sent my 501C/M to ICT, I checked with him as to parts availability and was assured that there is no issue with this.

ISTR that CameraWiz had a fair selection of shutter parts, springs, and so on, but I don't know that with certainty.

The only thing that no one has is replacement palpas linings for the 501 and later V bodies. The anti-reflective coating was introduced with the 501C/M and cracks with age, sometimes actually coming off entirely. I am told by People Who Know Hasselblad Things (tm) that this is no big deal and can be ignored.

The back barn doors are scare to find, though I think Barn Own had some of those as well. Unless the cracking on the coating of the later doors gets to be really obnoxious, it can be safely ignored.

Right now, I think repairs are still going to be fairly straightforward to get done unless you've run over your gear with a truck or something.

But that's going to change with time. So, I bought a second just-CLAed body (by Barn Own) - a 500C/M - last year, and my 501C/M is off to ICT for an overhaul. I bought that camera new some 25 years ago, so I figure I can get another 25 post-CLA or until I need a CLA

I read a note about a repairman in Thailand who had to CNC new parts to repair a SWC/M gear system controlling the shutter speed. Not every technician is going to be able to do that.

Those are the real techs.

When I was young, I worked for one of the biggest pro rental places in the midwest US. One of my colleagues was a Romanian emigre' who was a wizard at all things mechanical. Keep in mind that rental equipment gets beaten to death.

He mostly worked on movie cameras like Arris and Eclairs. I once saw him tear down an Eclair that had been dropped off a boat and sunk in the water. He spent hours not just getting it running, but getting it quiet so it could be used on set. This involved doing things like boiling washers in oil to permeate them with lubricant. He was just astonishing.

I worked on Nagra tape recorders that also had to be super quiet on set. The tape guides were made of ruby and NOT cheap to replace. It was a pretty great gig for a early 20s dude with major photo disease

Last I saw him decades ago, he was keeping a box of old Hasselblad 500 parts by his desk, from cameras he'd fixed, to build himself a 'Blad. Very, very cool.

I received my 500c back from KEH today. Works fine. Clean, lubricated and adjusted. Corrected a latch on the waist level finder too. It was jammed up, old grease and dirt. No explanation just a fixed camera in a box. 6 month warranty, hopefully it just keeps working. 400 bucks. 😎

That's great. Now use it! Don't just put it on the shelf with its cousins.

The 500c is miserable compared to the 501cm and the 503cw. Newer camera and lens doesn't use the miserable "set EV" semi-locked together shutter speed and f-stop, newer cameras are so much easier to focus due to much, much brighter screen, lens is bigger diameter, easier to grab focus, infinitely easier to adjust shutter speed and f-stop. CX and CW models have ttl flash.

I've done what I set out to do, care for this lovely camera while it's in my care. I'll get out with it. Just not often. To be honest I'm more of a rangefinder guy. 😊 😎

You can use the newer lenses with the independent speed and aperture controls on the older body.

Focusing is waaaaay easier with any of the V bodies if you use a chimney finder. I have both the Acutematte and normal screens and the difference - while very real - isn't as night and day as people think.

isn't as night and day as people think.

It is compared to the 1970 screen in this C. It's a strange camera, it's a C but it has interchangeable screens. Could be a transitional model, or someone had it modified.
It looks swell! I have a couple chimney finders. Nah!
I need to find a 1961 MGA with comfy leather seats, take the Blad and my sweety for a ride, shoot a roll of Ektachrome slides.
Haven't had a MGA since high school

The late David oddess (a technician that worked for hassleblad in their new jersey plant) told me that the reason was becasue they had an overlap in nameplates during the transition from 500c to CM because allegedly the person incharge of precuring the plates didnt do their job on time so the early CM's (which i beleive started to roll out in 71) had the old plate installed in the meantime.

Does anyone here have a 500c body service manual to share?
I’ve a 500c that was given to me and I’d like to repair it correctly, $400 is too much to spend on a out of hose repair, at this time.

In fact it’s what I paid for my nice EL/M before a 2 year warranty from KEH.

There should be one in the camera section in:

There are a number of zip files there related to Hasselblad spes and service for a wide variety of lenses and cameras

That shouldn't be possible. Must've been some adaptation (although, I don't know how, since the hold downs are not part of the 500C frame).

Me too, if you couldn't already tell.

Yes, correct it's a 1970 camera, a C/M in C clothing. This one has a split image screen. It's a pretty camera, 56 years old, has it's original Planar, no T* label, but it's flawless.

Repairing the 500C correctly seems to involve taking it completely apart and reassembling it. That's not impossible but they, apparently, tend to easily fall out of alignment and actually out of square. Also, if you have broken parts, you won't have any replacement.

If you're lucky enough to have an early 500C, you also won't find any information about repairing it. Or I can't...
