I know, I know...what did I expect...buying a used 205tcc!!!??? Well, not to bore you with the back story, but a good friend called a week or so back after buying some machinists tools off craigslist. He met someone liquidating the estate of a family member. I ended up buying said Hasselblad 205tcc, 110 and 150 lenses, 2 backs, flash, a large format Sinar setup, and a broncolor with two heads, all in professional tenba cases. Everything is pretty much unused, looks new, works great...well, except for the hasselblad.

The story I got was the equipment was purchased mid 90s, then the buyer suffered an accident and it sat unused. I’m thinking the lack of exercise is what did the hassy in. Here’s what’s going on - for those of you familiar with focal plane shutter Hasselblads. I’ve had 500s before, but this 200 series is all new to me.

You pop the shutter, and the mirror flips up, but doesn’t return. The shutter curtains don’t move. Battery is new, other functions such as metering work. When it’s at this point with the mirror up and the shutter stuck, you can hit the double exposure button and wind it, and the mirror drops immediately, but of course film doesn’t advance. You can also wind it traditionally, but the camera gives some not so good feeling resistance that you have to “snap” past. Mirror drops, camera cocks, film advances, but again when you pop the shutter button, the curtains don’t move.

I have a few questions: first off, will anyone even service these 200 series bodies anymore. I checked with David Odess, and he politely declined. Hasselblad Service’s NYC location website says they don’t service the 200s. Am I stuck sending this to Hasselblad Germany? Or does anyone have a reputable hasselblad tech who will touch this thing.

Secondly...any chance I’m missing something simple here? Like I said before, I’m not familiar with the 200 series Hasselblads.

Or do I just have a very fancy looking paperweight, along with a bunch of hasselblad components to sell now?

Thank you all!

The best thing that you can do is have a CLA done by a qualified Hasselblad service person. Many people hear use David Odess. Also read and lean the manual so that you will avoid almost all problems, just like any other camera.

Already spoken with David..he doesn’t touch the focal plane shutter Hasselblads.

I’ve been through the manual front to back a couple times now...still no luck

My Hasselblad repairman will not touch them any longer either.

Does it do the same thing when you set the shutter to "C"? With the battery removed for a few minutes?

C mode is fully mechanical on the 205s, it was designed to work with C & CF lenses without a battery.

This should tell you if it is an electrical or mechanical issue.

Yes, does it in C mode with the battery removed.

This will probably bring howls of derision, but you might contact ARAX in Ukraine; https://araxfoto.com/

They deal with the Russian Hassy focal plane copy, the Kiev 88 and might know someowne or even have some ideas of their own on how to repair the camera.

I have to assume they don't live in a vacuum and someone on their repair staff might have a professional interest in OTHER focal plane MF cameras.

I’m open to any suggestions...I’ll contact them after the holidays and see what they say- thanks

Yes, does it in C mode with the battery removed.
Just to clarify, the shutter cycle does not complete when set on "C", with the battery out, lens and back removed (body alone).

If so, then it leads you to a mechanical issue, which are usually repairable. If it has been sitting since new, like you think, then it's possible that the lube has resinified, and the latch that releases the shutter curtain is stuck. As Sirius always says, a CLA fixes just about every problem....

I would check with Hasselblad NJ first, even though Hasselblad officially no longer services the 200 cameras, there was a technician there that was trained on them, and did service them (depending on parts), but last I heard, he was close to retirement.

This was my thought...and hope, that it was a mechanical issue from sitting.

I like the thought of trying Hasselblad NJ before Kiev....

Let’s just hope that last 200 series technician didn’t retire at the end of 2019!!!

I'm really surprised no one has suggested you send it to (or drop it off at) Hasselblad NA HQ in Union , NJ. The only certified 200 series technician in NA works there. His name is Dennis and he's worked on my 203FE twice. He is absolutely terrific. Give him a call to talk to him about your situation (x309). I mentioned dropping it off because he may be able to fix it on the spot. But of course, that would be worth discussing on the phone first.

Thank you!!! With his extension even...I’ll be calling him on Monday!! It’d be worth the 6-8 hour round trip definitely—

Well, just mailed the body off to see Dennis Greco at Hasselblad NA in Union NJ. Like he said whenI asked if they still service 200 series bodies..”For now..”. So if you’re thinking of having you 201/203/205 cla’d, don’t wait too much longer!!

Whelp...that didn’t help. Spoke to Dennis at hasselblad NJ, sent the body in...was really expecting to hear from him that it was just a frozen shutter roller mechanism...and then I received a “service denied” message! I called Dennis right away, and he confirmed that the curtains are bad. Now here is what I don’t understand- both inner and outer curtains look and feel fine, they just don’t move. To me, that sounds like a mechanical issue.

So I’m back to square one. I’m not thoroughly convinced yet that this body is toast.

Any other recommendations??

The other suspect thing is, it doesn’t seem as though the camera was opened up so he could see the curtain mechanism. No screws removed..no leatherette...nothing. Weird. I asked Dennis if he had it open, and he said he did...but it sure doesn’t look like it.

Wow, what a beautiful body, and that gorgeous ƒ/2 lens!! Surely someone in USA or Europe fixes these cameras. The advice of sending your cameras in for cleaning/repair is valid for any Hasselblad user. Hasselblad-Bron still handles the V-series cameras, but for how long? 5 more year? 10 more years?

Well, with Hasselblad marketing a new V-series digital back with the slogan "Our legacy, your future", I do hope they will service V's for at least 10 years!!! but who knows...

I’m itching to shoot that 110mm...that’s why I’m so desperate to get this body fixed!
