It's been a long while since I bought film gear on Ebay, but has it gone up? This is just my guess from checking out Ebay recently. Also, I'm seeing that the price of expired film has also gone up. Tell me if any of your APUGers observe the same.

I lost the golden era of cheap gear on eBay. But prices seem to have gone up a little bit in the last year or so.

I use eBay as a last last resort, so I would not notice.

Yes, film gear prices are slowly increasing on ebay. I'd guess about 10% a year. Stuff can still be bought cheap, but not as cheap as 3 or 4 years ago.

Where is bunch of BiN speculants sitting on out of wack prices. If you check for how much gear was sold on auctions, it is often different story. But here is less auction sales as it was, it seems.
Most of Leica gear is in hands of speculants on ebay now. While the FSU gear is aggressively sold by Ukrainians and it is very cheap now.

I was watching a Minolta Autocord for sale. The person kept resisting it and the price kept going up. I think the days of cheap equipment on eBay are done.

Yes and the amount of quality gear for sale has also dropped.

There is alot more "Rubbish* that is described as "Has not been tested and the photos form part of the description"

If you buy it you know it is going to be broken in some way or has water damage or fungus ect

Also there is alot of reverse auctions with a Crazy high price and "Make a Offer"

Don't know if camera works, haze on lens, a little beat up. $500

Prices are definitely up. The problem with prices going up on eBay, is that prices creep up on other sites, as eBay tends to be a pricing guide for many. sucks, for sure, but it's just how it is.

I know that when I sell stuff on eBay, I have to pad it ~10% to pay for eBay fees. This also factors into pricing. Lame, but it's the system.

I also agree and see that the gear is at the same time of decreasing quality...

Glad for APUG and other forums that offer alternatives.

Good gear has always fetched high prices on Ebay. Junk gear prices are often set high but the crap gets passed in.

Managing one's expectations and keeping them at a realistic level goes a long way with surviving Ebay frustrations. Too many sellers have are sentimentally attached to their old gear and want ridiculous prices, or their partners have demanded the gear gets cleaned out now or else, and domestic passive resistance comes into play.

On the other hand too many buyers expect sellers to start auction prices at 99 cents. These buyers are, I suspect, resellers hoping to buy low and sell quickly for a reasonable profit, without really knowing what they have. When it doubt, price upwards.

Neither side will be happy with Ebay prices as they are nowadays. The good old days days are mostly past.

Sellers and buyers are often unrealistic. An Australian Ebay seller I know has relisted a "well used (and abused)" Rolleicord II at $400 as is, no returns for six months. It has a 16 exposure kit which I want, but not at that inflated price. This weekend I will order 12, 16 and 24 Rolleicord exposure kits from a US seller I found online for much less than $400 even with overseas P&P factored into the deal. So go figure.

All this horse trading tends to drive buyers away from Ebay.

Leica and Rolleiflex TLR prices are all over the place. My partner wants an M2 or M3 in good user condition and we are hunting on Ebay and elsewhere. M2s are scarce, one with an Elmar 2.8 went in March for $1,100, a good price, another (lensless) at $1,600 got no interest and the seller withdrew it. A Melbourne camera shop has a DS M3 with a Summarit at $1,350 with warranty, it has "issues" with fungus in the viewfinder but we will look at it and see. If this M3 was listed on Ebay for that price without a warranty, we would not even be interested. These are old cameras, and real world concerns apply (and at times collide with sellers' and buyers' cherished fantasies).

The Ebay situation is unlikely to improve given the sellers' mindset of "worth against value" and buyers' obsession with getting bargains at any cost. Both sides have their good arguments (and many bad ones) and the various parties are unlikely to agree on anything in the long run.

I definitely agree with kcham's comment re APUG, but due caution also applies here.

Nothing will change in the short to medium term. Until the next GFC levels out the playing field and we are all poor again, as we saw in the late 2000s and will see again, sooner or later.

Prices are up, but prices are also seasonal. Try late January and early February when no one has any money! Also, there is fluctuation due to the exchange rates. I find that there are handful of great camera sellers in Japan, the USA, and a few other spots in the world where you can trust what you are buying and get a fair value. No one is giving anything away. And as film popularity rises a bit more, old camera supplies start to tighten and prices go up. Still, in comparison to dSLR cameras and current lenses, I find what I see a refreshing bargain in all regards---no complaints! Just be super careful whom you choose to do business with on eBay. We have all been burned.

Short time lurker and first time poster. Seasonality and a lack of buyers or interest made Jan-April a heyday for me. It was really surprising to have little or no competition on auctions ranging from photo gear to snow goods.

Welcome to APUG

If so, great. If it's broadbase, it means more interest in film.

Plus I have, by in large, reached equilibrium. Something comes in, something goes out.

I spend some time in the Reddit analog area, which seems to be a lot of young people just becoming interested in film, for a variety of reasons.

I think those kids alone have driven AE-1 prices to ridiculous levels. It's become a real go-to camera for beginners.

These days, one of the most astounding 35mm film deals is a Nikon 8008s body for $15-$25. But it's not retro chrome and leather, so not as popular as old Pentax and other mechanical cameras that have far fewer features, don't use modern batteries, and don't have electronic shutter control. There's definitely a "fashion accessory" angle to the young-people-analog-resurgence.

Thinking I'll but up a couple more 8008 and N90 models before they become the next hot thing...

I don't know about fashion accessory, but I have an aversion to plastic bodied film cameras. The camera manufacturers kind of went off the rails beginning in the 1980s.

My T50 want's a word.

Prices are up on well knows cameras. Nikon F series, Pentax K1000, Olympus OM Series, Canon AE etc...

If you go for lesser known but still very good stuff you'll find amazing deals. Konica stuff as far as I've seen is still cheap, same goes for Minoltas and the ilk.

I echo the sentiments of M Carter and Cholentpot.

Certain 35mm SLR systems are quite expensive now but there are still mountains of gear for little money; Pentax K, Konica AR, and (German built) Rolleiflex SL feel like good value.

Prices for classic compacts, rangefinders and medium format equipment have got a bit silly.

It's good for us all that there is interest/demand.
