British prices include VAT. In the US, most states have a sales tax, which works like VAT but prices are always quoted without the tax, which can make things seem cheap, but the sales tax is 5% to 20% depending on where you live here.
That's true, but I still think we pay more generally in the UK. For example a single roll of 36 exp Kodak Portra 400 is £5.65 (dollar conversion) at B&H. The same thing in Britain costs £11.95, so about double.

But that same roll of film will cost a lot more at most local dealers in the US than it does at B&H. So the type of retailer plays a big part.
