Some of us used FP3 and HP3, it was cheap ex-Government stock when I was 15, already superceded by FP4 & HP4. Personally I wouldn'twant to use it again

I have some negs taken around 1960 by my late Father which, according to his notes, were on HP3 film from "Frank Young", who seemed to be one of the main suppliers of ex-govt stuff (the perfs and edge markings look rather like movie film). They're actually quite good in their way, with a sort of gritty "photo-journalist look" (can't think of any other way to describe it, though my Dad was so far NOT like a photo-journalist character!). Perhaps somewhat reminiscent of the old Eastern European "Orwo" look, rather grey and depressing.

By my time it was AW Young, Harringey Photographic Supplies, Marston & Heard, and yes HP3 was sort of gritty but so was Tri-X, HP4 was an improvement but HP5 was very much better.
My father used Selochrome.

But carrot's coloured Orange!
Surely a company like Ilford would have had something more like dark and white chocolate marble cake, and welsh cakes with black currants?
The popularity of carrot cake was probably revived in Great Britain because of rationing during the Second World War.[5] Carrot cakes first became commonly available in restaurants and cafeterias in the United States in the early 1960s. They were at first a novelty item, but people liked them so much that carrot cake became standard dessert fare.[citation needed] In 2005, the American-based television channel Food Network listed carrot cake, with its cream-cheese icing, as number five of the top five fad foods of the 1970s. Carrot cake was voted as the favourite cake in the United Kingdom, according to a survey in the Radio Times in 2011.

I like carrot cake! Can I have a slice, please?
The best thing about carrot cake is it doesn't taste of carrot. Well done to Ilford, it shows what can be done if competent management believe in a product. HP5+ has become my default 400 ASA B&W recently.
