Agreed, they're dragging this out way too long. I hope for Harman's sake the announcement is significant.

Maybe the "coming soon" timescale is like the projected opening date on the thread about Ferrania film which was initially about the start-up of colour film, wasn't it?

With literally nothing there as yet it reminds me of the cartoon showing a guy diving into an empty swimming pool at 8:55am with the attendant throwing in the first bucket of water while pointing to the sign that says : Pool Opening Time 9: 00am

Wasn't Cibachrome a technology of Ilford Marly and therefore now the recipe is with Adox?

I think I once read Cibachrome wasn't that complex to manufacture.

Even if simple to manufacture, it would likely be impossible to sell even a single manufacturing run of it. And can't forget about the chemical cocktails required that they'd have to find someone to package.

I thought of something improbable but logical: Harman's current product offerings include cameras, black and white film, photographic paper (both normal type and direct-positive), chemistry, a portable darkroom, trays, tongs, safelights, etc, etc. But one item that you won't find is an enlarger, specifically, a compact unit suitable for use in a pop-up darkroom. AFAIK, the last known sighting of that particular bird was in the late 1940s.

Cibachrome was based on a Tellko emulsion. Ciba bought Tellko then merged to form Ciba Geigy who then bought Ilford, Then Ciba Geigy became Ilford Imaging in Marly.

When Kodak suddenly stopped making B&W papers there was a knock on effect. Ilford in the UK went into voluntary receivership severing their ownership by Ilford Imaging in Marly. They still had loose trading links until the Marly side went bankrupt. the assets mainly trade names, customer base, etc were bought by a German company, still trading as Ilford Imaging, but they didn't buy the factory.

So no Adox/Fotoimpex have no rights to the Cibachrome orocess. They just happen to own or lease part of the Marly plant including a small flexible coating line.

Yeah that's where I stand. I have a lot of patience, but their likely intended audience generally do not. Usually social media campaigns are either quick, or have lots of breadcrumbs or teasers. I'd be looking for something else, probably equally as cryptic, on the Harman phoenix social media channels.

Anyone with good business sense. Because availability and pricing of raw chemicals is sporadic, and profit margins are low. Just because something is expensive, doesn't mean it's profitable.

I like this idea and had a look at some of Ilford's accessories, (courtesy of Photomemorbilia website) that Harman could resurrect and rebrand under the Harman name.

But first, let's get this out of the way, (only because it has been mentioned so many times.)



What do you think about these as likely candidates?





This could be similar to a smart phone scanner.

For ease of access, here are the items "Harman Phoenix" have got their trademark for

"Photographic film, paper and plates all being unexposed; unexposed sensitised photographic films; strips of sensitised photographic film [unexposed]; unexposed colour photographic films; unexposed cinematographic films; unexposed camera film; photographic developers; photographic sensitisers; photosensitive materials [films, unexposed]; chemical preparations and substances, all for use in processing photo-sensitive materials."

I'm wondering if they're actually going to drop the Ilford name?

I cannot imagine that; it would be an enormously stupid thing to do.

However, that list could imply they are forming a new distribution wing that can handle more brands and types of photographic materials than just those associated with Illford.

In any regard, their little posting has done the trick and generated endless speculation and notice.

I don't think that's a list Harman wrote. I think registrants for a trademark choose from the IPO's list of product classes.

How to classify trade marks

When applying to register a trade mark, you must use the classification system to specify the goods and/or services you'll be using it on.
