Hands-On LF Workshop in Toronto, October

Hi, all:

I'm going to be hosting a workshop for those interested in trying large format studio photography. This will be a three hour, hands-on, end-to-end shooting & developing session with supplied 4x5 and 8x10 view cameras and lenses.

The first hour we'll cover all movements and how they can be used for creative effect, aperture, depth of field, exposure compensation for bellows extension, macrophotography, and suchlike. We'll play with both strobe and continuous lighting.

The second hour will be posing and shooting with an open-minded model, with a discussion on composition for portraiture and fine art nude.

The final hour will be in the darkroom, developing your exposed film and producing your contact prints.

This workshop will be tailored for experienced amateur photographers who are interested in pursuing large format photography but wish a little guidance and hands-on experience.

The workshop will be held on a Wednesday evening in October (7 till 10pm) at a professional studio near the Lansdowne subway station. Free, secure, and monitored parking available.

It should be a fun, relaxed, and informative evening covering all the practical essentials.

I can accommodate up to 4 attendees, and there will be a fee to cover studio time, film & paper, and the model sitting fee.

Okay, some more detail:

Evening of Wednesday, Oct. 7th (from 7 to 10:30pm) at the David Beckett Studio at 224 Wallace Ave. suite 421 in the Lansdowne/Bloor area. Big black water tower beside the building, can't miss it. Secure parking in fenced lot at the north end of the building.

Fee, covering use of cameras, film, chemistry, model's fee, and studio time, will be $125.00 per attendee.

Part 1 will cover view camera basics (using supplied 4x5 & 8x10) including movements, loading film holders, DoF, aperture & exposure, lighting and measurement.

Part 2 will be the shooting session with a 'life model'. Some examples will be shown to get the creative juices flowing, but each photographer is free to define & execute their own composition, in collaboration with the model. You'll probably manage 4 sheets of 4x5 and 1 8x10.

Part 3 will be tray development of sheet film, with coverage of all the essential chemistry. The goal is to demonstrate (for those not familiar) how dead simple and satisfying the workflow can be.

We'll be shooting on orthochromatic sheet film: loading holders and developing film under red safelight so you can see what's happening. We'll make some contact prints as time permits. You'll take home prepared notes, negatives, and maybe a contact print or two.

I've only got one 'for sure' attendee so far, so don't hesitate to PM me if you want to participate. This is for those with minimal LF experience who want to see the end-to-end process.
