Hi All,

I haven't been here for awhile. Five years and counting! How does that happen? I still think of the site as hybridphoto and wish it hadn't changed identity, but hopefully the original mission is still here (??). Anyway, I had forgotten that there was an old thread on silver gelatin emulsions. I was shocked (not something that happens much with me) to see over 10,000 views. But, no responses in all this time. That's enough of a puzzle to prompt my bumping this thing.

If people are indeed interested in handmade silver gelatin emulsions, it would be nice to have a good home for discussions. More of a friendly conversation around the dinner table of a functional family than a bout in the gladiatorial arena that can happen on "the other site." Also, and far more to the point, most people are going to pull digital elements into any alternative process. And maybe, hopefully, fingers crossed --make good art.

Only 10 postings in the Hand Coated Wet Prints forum for all of 2013. Unless you want to join the endless discussions about scanning and digital negatives, there is not much here that bears directly on printmaking. The opportunity exists, but I guess printmakers are reluctant to post when they know their activities are of of only passing interest to the majority.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the heads-up. I thought I should at least try.

Interest in alt processes seems to be at an all-time high, but DPUG and and the B&S site have almost zero related activity. Maybe I am looking in the wrong places, or maybe we are just too busy actually making prints.
I agree about hybridphoto -- we used to be homeowners, now we are just renters.
Maybe we can coax you to attend the next APIS.

I suppose it's a classic feedback loop. One by one, people drop out of discussions for any number of reasons (I've lost interest in fighting the negativity on APUG). The fewer people participating, the less the incentive to keep participating. I hope people are replacing the time with actual printmaking. I know that's true for me.

I was going to try to make it to APIS this year, but October seems to be a weirdly busy time of year. I made a promise to myself to schedule in the next one. Great event. Great people.

Moving APIS to October has been a problem for a lot of us, but Dick and Melody will be hosting Platypus next July -- lots of prints to see, and good food, too.

It's a good thing I'm a contented beachbum, or I'd envy you living in the center of the photographic Universe!

SF for me is San Francisco, not Santa Fe. If there is hand-coated printing going on here (there must be some, right?), I am blissfully ignorant.

Sheesh. Apologies. Brain burp. I know you are in San Francisco. Perhaps my favorite place of all to photograph.
