Hello from little Orcas Island, in Washington State but historically almost part of Canada.

I'm Leigh, and I got into film photography a couple years ago during a dip in my digital activity. Had I started photography when I was younger, there'd have been only film, but I got into it late, started with digital and came to active film shooting even later.

While back into the swing of both digital and analog shooting, I've been leaning a lot more on film lately. I'm a heavy Nikon SLR man with an FE, FE2, N55 and F100 on the film side, but also shoot with an Olympus XA and Canon QL17. In medium format, I have a Mamiya 645 Super, Fuji GS645 (broken and lucky I didn't throw it into a canal in Amsterdam), shiny like-new Fuji GA645 and an Agfa Clack. While I don't have a darkroom, I use a changing bag and tank develop all my own B&W film at home, which of late makes up the majority of my film shooting.

Looking forward to hanging out here.

Welcome, Leigh. Your tale of coming to film from digital is a surprisingly common one, though I shouldn't be surprised at the frequency of these stories, considering the nature of this forum. My own beginnings were in film and b&w darkroom work at UW in the mid '80s. Switched to digital about four years ago, switched back within the year.

Thanks, all!

Fred, I tend to consider my story a bit unique in the timing. Film is what I grew up with and knew as the photographic medium, but I just didn't really get behind the camera until my late 20's, by which time digital had come to market being a UW student of limited means, it was very attractive to spend everything up front and have a camera I could shoot as much I wanted with, so digital it was. I started up film shooting almost by accident when my interest in photography overall had waned.

I am new to these forums though, so maybe you're right and there's plenty like me.

Welcome to APUG. I passed through Orca 3 summers ago on the ferry from Anacortes to Sidney. It looked like a beautiful place. I probably should have got off and stayed there

Greetings from Bellevue. Since it is impossible to leave the island in the summer because of the ferries, where do you get your film? Is there by chance a secret film emporium in Eastsound or do the bootleggers bring in from Canada.

Welcome from very close to you - near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal .

I expect you'll enjoy it here.

It's not impossible to leave the island in the summer, Slumry. Just painful.

Our local grocery store actually has a limited film selection, and it was from there that I shot my first rolls in twenty years. However, their price and selection of course cannot satisfy the avid shooter and I had to do my usual thing and turn to mail order. Adorama, B&H, eBay and most recently Freestyle have all gotten chunks of my income in exchange for photographic supplies. My freezer is now reasonably well-stocked after I got my big order from Freestyle last week, so I should be good for a while.

I expect if I stand on the roof and yell loud enough, you might be able to hear, Matt.

Leigh...Welcome to APUG from Dann (glockman99), down in Aberdeen (WA).

...A Nikon user, 'eh?...So am I, with the F3HP as my all-time favorite 35mm camera (I have a pair of 'em)...The F3HP is my favorite today, but tomorrow that might change, as I'm meeting a guy in Olympia to trade my Nikon D70 DSLR (& 18-70mm Nikkor lens, etc.) for a nice, late-model Nikon F4s, with "extras". I found that I'm more of a film sort of guy, rather than a digital sort of guy.
