As most people use VC papers, there doesn`t seem to be many graded papers left. There is Ilfospeed and Galerie from Ilford. Kentona (while stocks last), Kenthene and Bromide from Kentmere.
What other graded papers are available at the moment?

Foma and Efke make some as well. Foma makes both RC and FB. Foma makes Fomabrom and Fomabrom Variant. The first one is graded. There's also graded Fomaspeed (RC). Efke makes Emaks, aka Adox Nuance.

You've not done much shopping. There is a huge selection
of Graded papers, FB and RC. Shop B&H, Freestyle, Central
Camera, and ... ? Any volunteers ? Dan

I used to use graded paper some time ago. When the original Seagull went under I bought an Aristo VC 4500 light source and used Brilliant. When they quit I went to Ilford MG fiber and have been very happy with the choice. All you need is different sizes and a twist of the wrist.

Ilford Multigrade is my main paper, although I sometimes use Galerie for portraits taken in a studio where I have control of the lighting. Having read about the uses of other brands and types of paper on this forum, I sometimes get the urge to try something else in case I am missing out on something.

Missing Out

I sometimes get the urge to try something
else in case I am missing out on something.

Seldom mentioned by others than my self is
darkroom lighting; Graded vs VC. VC papers
are blue and green sensitive. Graded papers
are blue only sensitive. So, Graded papers
tolerate a safe light color to which the eye
is much more sensitive. The usual safe
light color for Graded is yellow to
orangish yellow.

If you take advantage of it's color blindness
Graded paper will allow you a much less
dark darkroom. Dan

It seems that outside the UK there appears to be a wider selection of graded. I enjoy using Ilford Galerie but it's only available in 2 or 3. The Adox is only grade 2 and I couldn't find a graded Foma paper on their website - only the Fomabrom Variant which is MG ? I know we keep getting told to produce negatives that print correctly on G2 but for most of us this is difficult to achieve consistently. It's possible to alter contrast on the paper with exposure/development but I find this only gives small adjustments.

A small convenience I know ... but when working with a graded paper on the baseboard (dodging/burning etc) I like the fact that you're looking at it with a white light instead of a magenta colour. I think the graded emulsions, especially the older types, react to some toners differently in that they 'split' more precisely.

I use a dichroic color head so I have an infinite range for VC.

Steve
The VC head on my enlarger is marked in quarter grade increments, although I can set the dial any where in between those if I wish, as the control over the grade settings is step-less from the very soft `00` through to the grade `5` setting with a constant exposure time.

What you seem to be hinting at is the convenience and greater flexibility of using VC papers over graded papers, which I strongly agree with.
There are times though when I prefer the `look` of an enlargement made on Galerie paper.

That`s an interesting observation Bill. BTW, your prints that I saw at the apug meeting in Cornwall were beautifully printed and presented, what ever paper you said it was (can`t remember). :D

Keith, they were on various papers - Ilford Warm, Fomatone, Ilford Neutral, Galerie and Forte Polywarmtone - Admit to being a darkroom tart when it comes to papers !!

Tom - I haven't tried ID-14, thanks for the info, will look into it.
I was printing a particular neg the other night on both Ilford Galerie and Ilford MG Neutral and found the Galerie to be a good stop softer.

Bill,

GALERIE has a completely distinct tonal and contrast range compared to Kentmere Bromide. Earlier in the year I made some comparisons between various papers, working along the line of finding one or two papers to use for everything; however I came to realize there are too many variables and questions of interpretation to make a "rule" as such.

I am finding similar to you. I usually print on Multigrade papers around grade 3 filtration and find that the contrast is close to grade 2 Ilfospeed and Galerie.

Beer's Contrast Control Developer

You can increase contrast with ILFORD GALERIE by
developing the paper in ID-14. Tom

Beer's 7 may give the same contrast boost. The
7 Beer blends allow a range of contrast control
when using Graded paper. Should work with
with VC papers as well. Dan
