GP3 100 exp 2015 film

I bought 10 rolls of this stuff a while back and just ran a roll through a Minolta Autocord I'm giving to my granddaughter. This was a test for the camera since I had just gave it a CLA and wanted to see if I accomplished what I had set out to do. I used my Samsung Note3 with a light meter app to determine exposure on all the shots. Since I had done no testing for a personal EI I just rated the film at ISO 80 and developed it in Rodinal 1:100 for 1hr with one inversion at 30min. I am impressed with this film/developer combo and will be running the next roll in my Rollei 3.5E(already loaded) and dipping it in WD2D+ pyro this time. I scanned these on a Nikon Coolscan LS8000 and they were some of the easiest negatives I have ever scanned. If the straight scan is any indication as to the exposure I'd say my Samsung app is overexposing by about a 1/3 stop. Printing in my darkroom might prove this wrong as I have only scanned these so far. The first three are straight scans with nothing done and the last two have levels changed slightly due to slight over exposure. I'll do another scan from the roll at 100% crop size to give an idea of grain.

But I've used a few dozen of this film and the only thing that stops me using it all the time is the curl, which I find so extreme as to make it absurdly difficult to handle either in the scanner or in the darkroom.

Otherwise the grain, tones and whatnot are more than good enough for my purposes

Hmm! The attachment link works for me, but I'll try to just do an attachment if more folks have this problem. I'm not real familiar with downloading on here anyway and might have done something wrong. Did you use the latest batch of the film? I did a pre-rinse(actually a pre-rinse with Rodinal 1:100 as the pre-rinse, long story) and when I poured it out it was clear, which surprised me. Also, I had no problem with curling while doing my scans. I think this is surely a new type base and a different anti-halation layer. JW

I used to get it from holgadget.com (who is uranium99 on ebay) - cheapest seller and very quick. Also not precious about the odd complaint - I had a roll assembled with the emulsion facing the paper and he replaced it instantly without question.

I used the "old" stuff too and it did curl a lot, but what I couldn't live with was the bleeding dot syndrome. This new stuff doesn't have any of those problems that I can see and the grain, at least in Rodinal 1:100, is plenty fine for this guy. JW

Yeah, and I'm Azorean-Luso-British and I use Ilford. But, I would use Shanghai GP3 as I'm not prejudiced against who makes what, unless "slaves" are put in the mix.
Oh, and your FED-2 isn't American, is it darling?

They were just some oddball test shots to see if the camera was working properly. Shanghai GP3 is a lot cheaper way to test than using precious Tri-X. I agree with you about buying this Chinese film. I like buying American if possible and the price is right. I had a friend that used to work for GM and if you parked a foreign car in her yard you would be going back out and moving it off her property. No joke! How do I know that? I drove a Volvo at the time and it was only parked in her yard one time and that was the first time. What's ironic about that is the fact at that time, in Michigan where I live, many small factories and businesses that supplied the auto-industry were shutting down at that time and people lost there jobs. Why? 'cause the Big Three Automakers helped setup and started buying all their parts from Mexico, Brazil and the Far East. All the time telling us to "Buy American". Yes, I prefer American or UK films, but..........................! You're a good guesser John W.

The film is only made on the single remaining coating line in Rochester NY. There may be some packaging and finishing happening elsewhere (Brazil?).

The paper (which most likely forms the bulk of Kodak Alaris' business) is certainly made at Harrow and in Colorado, and may also be made in China.

Some of the colour chemistry is made in China.

I don't know where the scanning and other office equipment is made, but I would assume China.

I don't think that list is completely up to date because it doesn't reflect the fact that the black and white Kodak chemistry is now being made in Germany.

The seller you mentioned is the one I use to buy the Lucky films from. Never had a problem and thanks for the info on when things go wrong. It is good to know. I bought some Lucky Colour 200 and SHD 100 from him.
You aren't the first to show that GP3 can be a good film. I believe it was here or it might have been in some Flickr group that there was an endorsement for GP3 with expiry date of 2016.

There might be some packaging still been done in Manaus. It might have been done elsewhere, but Kodak Brazil has/had product info for Kodacolor 100 and 200 when you couldn't see it anywhere else.
There was a converting/packaging factor in Mexico as all the Kodak Pro Foto XL I had was marked as packed in Mexico. I believe that one went down the pan some 2 years ago.

Yes, as much as I'd like to buy everything from "my" country of origin it is now almost impossible to do. Besides, money does talk to me and it says get as much "bang for the buck" as you can. Now, if I had my choice between Tmax100, Acros, Delta100, FP4+ and GP3 100? I'd take Acros above the rest simply because it's the easiest film for me to work with and the results I've got from it are tops. Some people like it, some people don't! John W

Boys, boys, boys let's play nicely now our one of you will have to leave the sandbox. Just kidding! pdeeh, I wasn't trying to say GP3 100 was the best ISO 100 film out there or anything even remotely close to that. All I wanted to say is how well it did stand developed in Rodinal 1:100. Plus, it doesn't have the flaws it used to have. Will I buy more when I run out? Heck ya! Will I use other B&W film stock too? Heck ya! It's nice to have something cheap to play with and something of higher quality/more expensive for the really important stuff. John W

Kodak had film manufacture (from coating) in France and UK up until 2005. Donno what volume they could do.

They (KA) still coat paper at UK Harrow on a different machine. The film coating people all let go. Go past site and it is still large.

Yes, and those shareholders never give a thought to the worker, his life, or his families life. It's all about the "almighty dollar" and greed. They always seem to justify their evil doings, but it sure would leave a bad taste in my mouth. Of course steak, expensive wine and caviar will easily cover that bad taste I guess. :munch:

Yup, the backing paper is junk and it looks like that hasn't changed at all. Maybe someday? I'll find out how it does for portraiture this weekend since I'll have all eight grandkids up to the cottage at the same time for once. I only have to decide on which to use, the Rollei 3.5E or the Hasselblad 500C? Should be fun anyway. John W
