In a fantastic feat of bad timing I'm flying to Edinburgh to next week on a photographic trip!!!

I don't want to risk film through x-ray machines, so can anyone recommend a good source of film (120 and maybe 5x4) in Edinburgh or Glasgow?

I can only guess what the airport searchers are going to make of monorail camera and tripod in my luggage!!!

Hi Chris

Calumet have a branch in Leith just to the south of Edinburgh otherwise you have to deal with Jessops in the city centre and you will not get 5 x 4 film there. Phone number is 0131 554 7648 best to call to make sure they have what you need.

In Glasgow, Williamson's of Sauchiehall Street (right at the end -- no. 540, I think) always used to be very good indeed; I've not been there for years. Call them and ask what they carry. A web search will turn them up.

Cheers,

Roger

I think you'll find that Williamson's is long gone I'm afraid. It was a store I used to like to visit when I worked in Glasgow, but never actually had the money to buy anything from it! Jessops was the cheap place to buy then and they had the massive fold-out pricelist instead of a fancy magazine style catalogue. Happy days.

Woe! Woe! Thrice Woe!

I feared this might have been the case, so before I posted that replyI checked the web. It looked as if they were still there but of course that's one of the great advantages of the web -- it's superb for historical research because no-one ever takes down obsolete information.

The shop I REALLY liked in Glasgow -- gone these decades, not just years -- was Frank's in the Saltmarket. That was like Brunning's in High Holborn or some of the better NY stores 25 years ago. The nearest to either that I know now is Camerex in Exeter. For a conventional camera store, my current favourite is probably Foto Skoda in Prague.

Cheers,

Roger
