Good old D76 and HP5+

Operative words are "were" a professional photographer. Got out of that ~20 years ago after a bad accident left me unable to shlep the heavy equipment around or stay on my feet for hours in the darkroom. Spent a few years wandering the wilderness - and now I make the "internet work". :D

Much has changed. But the method of getting from A - B is still familiar ground.

it is certainly easy to get mired in too many variables. And if it mires you and gets in the way, get rid of it. For me - it was about having to duplicate or reproduce looks that were brought to me. If I would have had to constantly "experiment" to figure it out every single time, it would have drove me mad. It was examine, measure, think, test, record, print, etc. Keeping great notes and knowing how to reproduce them was a great value. We had no "google" back then. So if you didn't have notes or an article on it, it was _gone_.

Certainly go with what works for you. It's your art, and your vision. Substance is so very important, as technically perfect boredom is something I have created (too much of) on demand for others.

In the commercial world - you keep your mouth shut, and produce whats requested. Then, when they are not around, make one or two that sing - and slip the sample in - Sometimes an Art Director realizes that if they just 'let you drive' you may do a better job than what they are requesting. Other times, pride gets in the way. Sometimes it's a client that wants this years catalog to look just like last years - regardless of the fact that it could use a serious facelift. I have worked with some great AD's and some lame ones. But it put me in a crucible of learning and producing that I am glad to have.

Now, I am able to just relax into it, knowing how to swim, but having to learn all the currents at this location. HP5 and FP4 seem to be about the same and Tri-X. HC 110 looks to have changed, but I have not bought any of the new stuff or tested it. D76 is still the same, and I understand that Rodinal is gone - but not really. Paper - Man that has ALL changed. So I am testing - and shooting, and having fun all over again. I feel almost naked without a densitometer, but I know how to work without one.

So it's all new again, and all the same old stuff again. Exciting times. my D2 and D5 are back from the dead.. and another d5 in the resurrection process. Found my old print dryer, Print washer is long gone - processing tubes seem to be OK. Trays, tanks reels. all coming together. Bought some 4x5 stainless tanks off the bay, and getting a new darkroom built out. Right now running makeshift but functional. By summer I hope to be able to step into the revolving door that leads to magic land of fixer fumes and bask in the warm Sunshine of my Thomas Duplex. My happy place.

And btw - my film of choice for much work is HP5+ and Developer is D76... it is a really good versatile combination for sure.

Hc-110 hasn't changed at all, except in bottle size, so you don't have to worry about that.
 
NOT making this a Rodinal thread, but... if you buy Adox Adonal (soon to be called Adox Rodinal in the USA, then you will find it is the same as the last Agfa product you may have bought.

I saw a bottle the other day, and it looked lighter in color and thinner in consistency than I remember, but that could be just failing memory.

As for the Rodinol, I knew that there was a "same as" formula out there. I never used it much, but tri-x in rodinol has a particular look to it that many like.

DREW is half right, it's SUPPOSEDLY the same HC-110, but somehow is thinner (more viscous) and a different color, and produced by a different chemical maker, but somehow supposed to be the same.
 
As for D-76... I will soon be venturing on that journey...

Mostly because I'm broke and I have a few bags and cans to test just to see how I like it, so why not... :smile:
 
He's looking into a $900 lens for a camera he doesn't own. Can't be too broke.
 
BTW Stone, good decision, you'll do fine with D-76.

Currently broke, changing jobs (won't start for 2 weeks (so pay will be 1 month from now and then will play catchup on bills).

The money for the lenses and cameras would be from my tax return which will be in a month or two...

The weather is getting warm enough to mix outside in the next few weeks when I run out of DD-X.

Money changes everything :wink:

Plus I bought it to try it, once, just to know how it functions, but unless it blows me away I most likely won't stick to it.

Last time I tried powders (making POTA from scratch) I spilled stuff everywhere...
 
You won't have that problem with D-76. One package... no mixing from scratch. You'll be OK.

Let's hope, I'm not excited as much about that as if I had ID-11, I like mixing in 1L not 5!!! Dumb....

Anyway the DK-50 can from CALDOR will be fun too!
 
Last time I tried powders (making POTA from scratch) I spilled stuff everywhere...

I am pretty famous around here for my complete lack of coordination but D-76 is pretty straightforward. I fill my 1 gallon plastic pitcher with water that comes hot from the tap, dump the bag into it, mix it until things clear up again, add some cool water to top it off to a gallon. Then I put a LARGE funnel in the top of my 5L jug which is sitting in the sink, and fill it with the mixed D-76. Cap the jug of D-76 and set it aside to cool, rinse the pitcher, throw the empty bag, and I am done.

Heck Stone, I spill more Rodinal trying to pour it into my little 50ml graduate for mixing than I spill when mixing up each batch of D-76.

I don't own 5L jugs nor have space for that so have to get soda bottles (which I don't drink and aren't air tight) what a pain!! :wink:

It's about the experience for me...

Tea might be more pure in a plastic bottle in a tea bag, but to me, the act of steeping in a cast iron pot or porcelain with loose leaf, is to me part of a ceremony.

So is drinking wine with my best friend, tasting and commenting on all the various wine things we can identify. It's a pleasure, including the cork, the glass, the pour, the aerating, etc... None of which involves a box/bag and plastic tap....

Much like shooting film, developing and printing in a darkroom instead of digitally on a computer....

Just be careful - mixing a powder outside can be a bigger mess if it's windy.
 
Do you nitrogen burst for the aerating?

I started to become a devotee of D-23(1+1), using the times of D-76(1+1) for Rollei RPX 400.

Negative have everything to print when exposed properly.
