Has anyone transitioned to GIMP 3.0 already? RC2 released in the last week of 2024, so it's reaching maturity.

I've been working with it for a few days now, and so far I've not run into any trouble with it. To the contrary; the long-awaited dynamic adjustment layers have finally arrived. Well, that's what Adobe calls them; in GIMP, I think they're called "layer effects".

The user interface has been revamped as well; icons have grown to a bigger default size to match the trend of higher-res monitors. Otherwise, I've not noticed many major changes; I think most of the changes are under the hood and in specific areas, like color management, that I've not explored yet in this version.

Just curious whether others have also been using the 3.0 version.

I am looking forward to exercising GIMP 3.0 when I get back from the present trip.

I have not gone to the latest Release Candidate yet. I don't want to have to mess around until it's fully baked. I am glad to hear you are not having any issues with this release though. I am very excited for the new layer effects and am really looking forward to having the Darktable to Gimp workflow working again. I dropped Adobe and haven't looked back. This new release of Gimp should give me all I need.

I haven't looked at the updated versions of gimp in a very long time. Thanks for the notice. I'll have to take a look.

I am glad to hear you are not having any issues with this release though.

It seems pretty stable - not any less so than the 2.x versions I had been using prior.
I did experience a minor glitch while scanning large images (several gigabytes per image, with a few images open, while doing other stuff in GIMP as well as other software), where the acquired image data was all black. I don't think this is due to the RC2 version, though. The GIMP-scanning interface has always been slightly funny; in fact, in the stable 2.x versions I have frequently experienced Epson scan crashes at the end of a scan (which fortunately left existing image data unaffected, including the most recent scan).

In editing, I have a feeling that memory management may be a little more effective; it seems that manipulations on multi-gigabyte images are now smoother than they were before. Photoshop was far superior in this regard, but it seems (and I hope) that with v3.0, GIMP is making steps in this area as well.

Let me know what you guys (also @Sirius Glass and @darinwc ) think once you've had the chance to give it a try.
