I am running GIMP 3.0.4 on an iMac with Sequoia 15.6.1. The last major upgrade to GIMP (presumably to v.3.0.0) made a change to the controls such that all the sliders, mouse movements, etc became far more sensitive (small mouse movement produces huge change) and actually very difficult to work with.

Has anyone else had this experience, and can anyone advise if there is a simple solution (eg a hidden dialogue that resets the mouse sensitivity)?

The system-wide mouse control is in the settings app in the Apple menu. Most apps will honor what’s set there, Gimp could have additional controls though.

I use GIMP for prelim input/output scanning ops prior to sending off to lab. But my work is Windows-based so nothing out of the ordinary to report regarding control sensitivity. Perhaps turn off hardware acceleration if Apple has this (?). Though a little left-of-field, in Windows, hardware acceleration has recently been implicated in crash-bang-wallop behaviour of the Opera GX browser; tweaking HA had a surprisingly dramatic stabilising affect (though I think there is some corruption going on behind the scenes...).

It may have something to do with either your screen resolution setting or the setting for the amount of "zoom" your OS gives to the UI of apps. Many pieces of software built with older frameworks don't play nicely with large screens. Mouse movement will be involved with the scale the OS thinks your UI elements are at, which sounds like it isn't being communicated properly to Gimp.

In Windows, the setting looks like this:

I agree it must be something to do with communication between the OS and GIMP, but I've tried every combination of system mouse settings (I an't find a screen resolution setting), with no effect on GIMP.

Thanks for your time and suggestions, everyone. I'll raise it on one of the GIMP forums.

Just as a data point, I’m using 3.0.2 on Sonoma with no mouse problems. When I get a chance I’ll update to 3.0.4 and see if anything changes.

Edit: I checked and 3.0.4 also behaves for me. M2 mini with a pair of unremarkable third-party monitors.

When I upgraded to GIMP 3.x on Linux I found that some of the menus were missing features, so I had to remove it and go back to an earlier version of GIMP.

I can't find a screen resolution setting
To find the screen resolution settings on a Mac, go to System Settings, then Displays and you will see:

If you hover your cursor over one of the five icons (Larger Text ... Default ... More Space), then the pixel dimensions of the screen for that setting appear under the icon.

But, even if it works, I don't see changing your screen resolution as being a practical solution to your mouse problem. If there is no setting in Gimp that you can change to improve the issue, then it may be necesary to file a bug report with GIMP, and wait for them to fix it. Meanwhile reverting back to a known working version.

Are you using an Apple brand mouse?

I know some third party mouses have proprietary software to control the mouse, independently from the Mac OS mouse settings panel. My Keychron M3 mouse has dozens of configuration and customization settings in an application called the Keychron Engine. However, I don't think I can make the mouse behave differently, depending on which software is active. I can create Profiles, so I could create a special "slo-mo" profile for GIMP. But I still think the best solution is going to be a bug fix the GIMP developers.

Thanks for that, don't know how I missed it. So now I've tried it, and can report that changing the screen resolution in that way didn't solve my mouse/GIMP problem. Anyway it rather spoils the point of having a nice hi-res screen for photo-editing.

I am using an Apple Magic Mouse. In GIMP there is a dialogue (via the GIMP drop-down menu) to Configure Input Devices. The Help page says that by default the mode for a mouse is set to 'disabled' - and indeed so it is in my case, although my mouse does in fact interact with GIMP, so I'm totally baffled as to what the Configure dialogue actually achieves.

If we're convinvced that this is a GIMP bug, I'll report it as you suggest, and revert to an earlier version for my use. TBH, I didn't notice any major advances with version 3. I'm not complaining: it's free after all, so we're at the mercy of altruistic people with the skills to write the code. It's way beyond my level.

I am not convinced this is a GIMP bug -- until after it has been ruled out that there is no user setting in GIMP that allows you to improve the mouse reactions. Such as (possibly?)...

Are you able to select any other setting in that dialog? If so, what are the options?

OK, if I understand correctly, it is only when using other input devices, that the mouse should be set to disabled?

I did try the other settings for the mouse (Window, Screen), but they didn't change anything.

The online Help seems to suggest that no-one knows what the 'Window' setting does anyway!

Are you using any of the gesture / multi-touch functionality of the Magic mouse, like emulating a scroll wheel? Try a different mouse, like an absolutely lowest common denominator wired USB mouse. I don't know that it has anything to do with the mouse, but this is a simple way of eliminating one variable.
