Hi all,
I've posted a few times here, but I'm still pretty new to APUG, so I'll introduce myself. But first I'll just say what a helpful, interesting and friendly site this is.
I work from home for a company based in Vienna. At the moment I'm in the process of establishing a proper darkroom in our present house. It's split into the main darkroom in a bungalow out the back, and print-washing in a bathroom in the house. I do all my own 35mm and MF B&W processing and printing. It would seem that I am one of the very few who use a Paterson Auto Colortherm and not a Jobo for the colour work. Most of my photography is now MF rather than colour, as once you've tasted those big negs, you can't really go back.

Hi Nige,
Isn't it just? It looks like winter is finally over. It won't be long before I need to cool my B&W developer to 20 C rather than warm it to 20 C.

hehe! I'm looking forward to the coming couple of months where the tap water warms up a bit (currently coming out at about 14C) but next it will be too warm and I'll be looking forward to winter!

Greetings Kevin from Hawaii!!! Good to see your icebreaker. I hope the weather gets better for you, especially since I will be in Victoria in about 3 weeks.

Ooops - I meant most of my work is now MF rather than 35mm, not MF rather than colour, but it is B&W rather than colour.

Hi Kevin!

Welcome! You know, I just read an interesting bit in the newspaper about Argentinian ants that have made a giant colony under Melbourne. They said the colony extends for 60 miles!!! Don't suppose you have any ant pics??? :D

Well, enjoy yourself here & I'll be looking for your pics (ants or other things) in the gallery!

Welcome from Ipswich - the one in Massachusetts, U.S.A.

- I recently discovered the answer to a long standing question, "What is Vegamite?"... but ... what is a "Dandenong"?

Another welcome from Massachusetts. We are headed toward our fall season, the best (IMHO) for photography - even Black & White.

There is a web site dedicated to Vegemite ... produced by Kraft foods. I've yet to try it ... something to do with brewery yeast ... and loaded with "B" vitamins.

Got that ... now what the @#?? is a "Dandenong"?

Someone once said that the Platypus was proof that the Great Creator drank hard spirits once in a while. I have this image in my mind's eye of the first explorer to discover this animal, reporting to his boss, "... Uh, you are not going to believe this, but..."

LOL :D . Yes Vegemite, might fall into the same category. Ya either love it or hate it. It's black and sticky, smells funny, full of vitamin B, made with the help of Bovines and made across the ditch(!) So on first appearance, doesn't seem to have much going for it  .

ya gotta try it at least once in your life.

John

But I love the Platypus as well.

We go thru lots of vegemite! Great stuff! I won't touch marmite however, that stuff is just awful!

Dandenong is a suburb of Melbourne, the Dandenongs are a range of hills (couldn't call them mountains as such although they are bigger than hills, and get snow occasionaly)

not my work but worth a read --> http://unite.com.au/~u3819a/various/aust.html

Thanks for the warm welcomes.
Robert from Hawaii, you'll love Victoria in 3 weeks time. Spring in Victoria is the best. I assume you're already familiar with parts of Victoria as you already answered somebody else's question about the Dandenongs.
Jeanette, yes, that is true about the Argentinian ants. Apparently the colonies work together and in the last 30 years or so, they have been killing off the native ants.
Vegemite is one of the tastiest foods ever invented, and proof that not only is beer good, but good things can come from the bottom of the barrel too.

Here's a question for you Southern Hemisphere photographers:
When you pour your solutions back into the bottle, Which direction does the solution turn as it goes through your darkroom funnel? Clockwise or counter-clockwise?

Yes, I am somewhat familar with Victoria. I've visited Australia a number of times in the past few years; mainly Bright, Vic, Alice Springs or Sydney. I have been to Melbourne only once though. As in previous trips, I will drive down from Sydney; I like the drive, although I still wish the steering wheel was on the other side of the car.
