I tried misting the bellows with Fabreze and then drying the bellows off but it didn't have any effect at all. I was hoping that Fabreze would be an easy out but it didn't work

Depends.

Ineffective for odors and gases

Ionizers don’t destroy odors and gases, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are released from products like paints, cleaning supplies, and adhesives.
VOCs are considered to be indoor pollutants and may cause health problems. Unfortunately, ionizers are ineffective for reducing VOCs in the air.
I was referring to ozone generators actually. Those kill odors but they aren't healthy which is why I stated "put it in your garage or porch." They do work. I've used the little one I have several times. Totally worth the $20ish I spent on it years ago when I got an Olympus FT that was musty and smokey. Nothing else fixed it. There is a reason why they use big ozone generators after floods and such.

I like the charcoal recommendation (xkaes). Activated carbon works great for removing odors in air filtration. I think any charcoal would work.
The basis of all disposable water filtration include carbon block or granulated charcoal (usually coconut shell charcoal) Taste and odor filtration.
Ozone is effective but it's pretty reactive, I wouldn't get to high of concentration.

Good luck, I would ditch the case.

Fabreze is worthless- there is a product called fizzion (made for pet stains/odors) that is nothing short of magical. I haven’t tried it on a camera case but it would be worth a shot.

I agree about Fabreze.

We've tested Fizzion because we have a cat that won't stop urinating on the carpet (we're trying different remedies). It's good at removing various stains (non-pet related ones as well) - even very old, worn-in stains. It's not the best at removing the urine odor.
That said, cat urine odor is far worse than a mildew smell, so it may be worth a try.

If you try it, test on small areas first. It has been color-safe on our carpets, but you'll want to be careful. Also, don't mist the area, put on enough that it can soak in a bit (but don't saturate like you would a urine-spot).
