Genre assumption

Whenever I talk to people about traveling to some country or location and mention I like to take photographs, 99% react by talking about landscape photography in relation to the place in question. I have very little interest in landscape photography, but am more interested in a small corner of behaviour by people and/or composition within the location. Do others find presumptions about their interests by others sometimes invalid?

all the time ... but it usually happens if the people i speak with who
dont know me or have any idea of my interests. i can understand that ...
and it really doesnt bother me too much because usually the people / person
is projecting their own interests in that case and it leads to an interesting conversation/s

Everyone has assumptions, part of conversation is to share what you are after. I like travel photography, some of it is landscapes, but most of it for me is about people. Think Steve McCurry etc...

I've found people assume things about me all the time. Some see me as unconventional, and they often seem to justify my interests by assuming the only reason they personally would do the same thing.

This hasn't followed me in photography so much, save for assumptions on why I still use film; though I am often assumed to be a real "photographer" when I'm just taking snapshots, lol.

Then you need to be more assertive and clear about your interests when talking to other people. Don't give them room to make assumptions. An elixir such as tequila can really help to make the information flow.
