Hi there guys,

My name's Geoff, and I live in Melbourne Australia.

Still have my very first camera — an English-made "VP Twin" that uses 127 film. Got it as a 10th birthday present in 1956!

Currently using a pristine, circa 1975 Nikomat FT-2 with (generally) Fuji Superia 200.

Have been using digital for nearly 10 years, and have gradually become disillusioned with its pseudo-technological "advances". Smile detection? Miniature effect? Background defocus? 16MP on what should be 4MP sensors? Is that the best the digital marketers can come up with?

I kind of see digital versus film cameras a bit like the CD versus vinyl record thing. Digicams are quick, down and dirty, and all about instant gratification — whereas film needs planning, thinking, and tweaking and loving. My 35mm camera's 35 years old; will my Sony NEX 5 still be around in 3 decades? I'm guessing not. (Hope I am LOL.)

If you get stuck for processing I do B&W, C-41, E-6 and ECN-2 (movie film bulk rolled into still rolls like Kodak 50D and 500T, I also have the film stock).

Thank you all kindly for the welcomes. I'm also pleased to see some other Melburnites here!



I've just bought a Canoscan 9000F (oops... apologies for using offensive language, I promise it'll only be this once LOL) but haven't yet fired it up to scan my colour negs.

This far, I've really been enjoying the "restrictions" of only having 36 shots immediately available to me when I'm out and about. I find I'm not just snapping away for the sake of it, like using the other medium. I'm spending a lot more time composing my shots with care, and more subject discernment (I hope!) and thinking about the value of the end result from the story-telling aspect, particularly as others will see them.

One of my favourite scenarios is old, weathered, crumbling buildings out in paddocks. I always like the sense of history that exudes from these buildings, and which are often being reclaimed by nature or the elements. I also like the sharp contrast between the man-made angularity of structures against the random shapes and form of nature's elements.

Anyway, enough rambling!

36?!

I find I simply can't fire 36 exposures. I struggle to fill 10 sometimes on a 120 roll.

A welcome from Perth, though Geelong is the dig.
I canvouch for Canon scanners: I used one continuously from 2001 to February this year!
Athiril, Many photographers load 36 xp rolls but only use 20; my cut off is 25 exposures now. But I'm chewing entire 120 rolls in the 6x17 at a great rate!

I get 12 exposures from an 120 roll. The wonders of 6cm x 6 cm [technically 56mm x 56mm]!
