Yes, it’s all from his usage. All.
If you think HARD about the sprocket holes, it will make sense.

A lot of misinformation from Leica newbs and wannabes, on that on Leica forums, regarding many leica subjects. But this one takes the cake. All sorts of experts on how a silver chrome should and shouldn’t age and so on... all hogwash. Sad that it becomes “truth” once read by a new generation of amateurs.

The sad part is that forums used to be filled with true experts,
passionate collectors, connoisseurs. Their knowledge was amazing.
Yes, the Winogrand M4 patina was debunked, and many other Uber-worn Leica cameras were shown-off. It’s just that those folks don’t waste their time arguing with Matlocks, etc. anymore.

So, this being said, please enterntain us as to why you think Winogrand’s camera is faked, according to you?

Anything can wear out, even chrome. But I would think that if you took as many pictures as he did then the camera wouldn’t spend much time in a bag or protective case, and it’d be in constant contact with all sorts of things. Coats, car seats, tables, brick walls, whatever.

I have a chrome Spotmatic SP that has seen better days. I love that I can set it on the ground or wherever and not care. It has a few brassy spots appearing.

No particular reason to disagree.
Particularly if you get the chance to see this movie:

I was lucky enough to see it screened and then participate, along with other audience members, in a question and answer session afterwards with Sasha Waters Freyer, the Producer, Director and Editor. Sasha Waters Freyer is a very interesting documentary filmmaker and professor of photography and filmmaking.

It’s hard to believe that anyone thinks HARD about sprocket holes, but there it is. 😄

Is there an original report or article being referenced by the original post?

Wow, look at all those great shots Winogrand took. None with a Leicavit or motorwinder.

Seems he knew what he was doing. It’s all about the skill of timing. Some people have it, some don’t.

He had great skills, and a wonderful eye, and was a very conflicted and, at the end, unhappy soul.
One of the interesting parts of Professor Waters Freyer's post screening conversation with the audience related to the efforts necessary to develop so many, many rolls of film - at the end Winogrand just photographed, he almost never developed the rolls he shot.
The documentary film includes many photos that Winogrand saw in the viewfinder, but never saw in negative or print.

That's so cool. Glad it wasn't at the Leica Store SF when it was robbed 2 weeks ago, we'd never see it again
