I would ask, even though you've been on the site for 15 years, does anyone actually know you?

I'll have an improved feedback system running this weekend which should help people get a decent feel for reputable sellers. The best thing possible is to never make a transaction that has no buyer protections. There are also escrow services online as well. The biggest red flag is usually they try to shift you into private emails, then throw excuses about payment methods, then ask for an obscure payment that offers you no protection (money orders, etc).

Perhaps, similar to the big yellow banner for members, you could have a big yellow banner at the top of every classified thread that says "Use PayPal", etc. Sometimes, eagerness displaces common sense.

I'd be reluctant to go this way. I'm fairly sure that many people first encounter Photrio because they are internet searching for something they want to buy, and their search lands on a Classified listing here.

This is pretty much my situation. I'm surprised it took me this long to join but I came here looking to buy a Bronica from a classified link and working toward enough messages to unlock messaging with them. For some reason, I was able to reply to the classified once and our PM conversation once.. but now locked up.

Anyways, looking forward to participating more in the community here afterwards but raising my hand as a blow-in from a camera hunt haha

If I remember correctly one needs to be a paid subscriber and twenty posts.

Nope.
You need to be a paid subscriber to start a sales thread.
The post threshold can be removed by @Sean, the site owner. To reach him, Report your own post and include the request in your Report, along with anything else you wish to reference in support.

Thank you for clarifying this quickly. Mea culpa.

I don't think there's any way for the website to address this problem. Or maybe I don't feel it's the website's responsibility. It's more about each individual exercising common sense, and assuming the risks involved.

Buyer beware. Even on a house sale, something that has many legal safety features, the buyer still has to do a final inspection to make sure the seller didn't remove essential items.

Agree. Probably by the time they got to 30 comments they no longer which to sell. On me, I wouldnt mind a few restrictions if that mean a safest selling/buying experience.

I'm getting tired to always having to trade a mile of convenience for a mm of security; airlines do too much of that already.

This is all ridiculous. It should be no onerous task for someone genuinely interested in photography to take part in the forum a bit. It is an onerous task for a scammer to try to make 20 genuine-sounding comments before ripping 6 or 7 people off in the classified here. It will keep those people away.

The upside is that the inconvenience isn't visited upon you for very long. After an introductory period, the inconvenience is gone. Unlike the airlines, where each experience involves suffering as if new!

These scams are running rampant on hobby forums that have classified ads. The easiest way to protect yourself is realizing the perpetrator of the scam rarely can answer specific questions that require some technical knowledge of whatever it is you are looking for.

They also usually cannot provide specific photos that are requested because if they even have any photos, they are photos off of a web search. Asking for more photos will usually prompt them to send photos that are obviously with different backgrounds or lighting.

So if you get a funny feeling, just ask technical questions and ask for specific photos of certain areas of the item. Nine times out of ten they will suddenly stop corresponding.

Thats quite a good advise el. They would need to have the actual item for that. Thanks.

Ask for a photo of the item for sale beside a piece of paper with their forum name and current date written on it. If they can't comply with that then they don't have the item in their possession.

I am trying to hit my 20 post minimum, to be able to buy but mostly unload many things I bought during the coronavirus thing.
Looking for a lens barrel for a graflex xlsw 47/8.
Want to part ways with an OM3 and 55/1.2 zuiko the body works, needs seals and a backlight, the lens has the yellowed glass and is stuck on the sweet spot (2.0). This is good to very good and needs to be sent to zuiko.com
have Olympus motor drives , nicad packs(need recell), chargers, AA packs and an intervalometer( powers drives, haven't figured out how to get it to intervalo😁 yet, may not be repairable)
OM4T good.
And much more....
I know this isn't the appropriate place but my local camera shop already got a lot for not a lot
Don't want to sell on eBay

This is great news!

It has been this way for as long as I can remember.
I'm curious - is the need to be a subscriber in order to sell things here news for others?
