Hi All,

I have installed a plugin that allows everyone to see deletion stubs from posts that have been removed. Previously, any deletions would go into a black hole. The stub will now show the name of the member who had a post removed and the reason it was removed.

I will delete a test post below so you can see what it looks like.

You can see the stub above this post. It will remain in the posts list wherever it is removed.

Thanks,
Sean

Why do this??

One reason is when threads go off the rails and posts need to be removed. It can be confusing when posts vanish from a thread without an explanation. Also, sometimes we have to remove posts that were a reply to a previously deleted post. This helps members understand what happened and why a post was removed.

We had such in the longer past.

Does this "deleted"-notice appear at once or do we have 5min as with the "edited"-notice?

The moment a post is removed it appears and remains permanently.

It even works retrograde. I mean indicating post delations done at the former system.

Yes.

I even assume most deletions or by posters themselves. Think of a kind of posters-remorse, or realizing that one posted nonsense, and before contemplating and correcting better having it vanished not to have too many people see it.

  • Reason: Testing the self delete function. Does it leave an audit trail?

How about if the poster deletes own post for any reason. Does that leave a trail?

Yes, I just tried it. See just above.

I think they should be given a certain amount of grace period. I am not sure what purpose it serves if there has been no replies to it.

Why a grace period? If there had been one, then I would not have been able to test the software? Other than making the coding more complex, the code works now, why change it?

i don't see the point of my having to know if someone posted something and changed their mind after some time. It simply adds another piece of information I can live without.

Why do we need to know if someone deleted a post? I guess if I delete a post, I'll just give as the reason "Testing". Others can do the same. Then nobody will have any idea why anyone deleted a post. That will certainly clear everything up and enhance transparency in moderation.

One of the reasons that is helpful to know that you have deleted a post is that when you go looking for it, it reminds you that you made the post, and then changed your mind.
😉
It is often helpful as well to the moderators.

Yeah, if the moderator deletes a post for cause by way of the moderator's duty, then may it makes sense to make a note of it. and let everyone know why the post was deleted.) If I delete my own post, there is no benefit to anyone else as long as no one replied to it. (if you forget you yourself deleted a post, I am not sure I need to know about that - perhaps it can be added to your profile as Deleted Posts or something.)

Sorry, but just don't see the point.

I've seen many user deleted posts with various reasons in the past. Quite often discussions can get heated and someone might say something they wish they had not. They'll delete their post and give a reason like "I shouldn't have said that, apologies". In which case it can show members self moderating, which can be a positive thing for all to see. Out of 100s of posts a day I doubt many get deleted by members at all. As matt said it can also help moderators pick up on scammy behaviour. Maybe someone makes a deal in the classifieds then deletes it. Then there is a breadcrumb to follow later if needed.

Does it show the deletion of the deleted thread?

That would be counterproductive to moderation and trying to keep some threads under control. If the offending post is viewable then it could hamper getting things back on topic.

Transparency in moderation? Very wise, who could want excessive transparency! (Sorry, couldn't resist!)
