Thanks guys. I was nervous about doing this but found a good way to maintain our small analog advertisers and also supplement with the google ads. The main rollout is in 28days.. for now it's in limited zones.

Most all the ads are only around the perimeter of the site.. (header, sidebar and footer). Leaving the content areas without any distractions. I figure many are used to these types of ads, but I want to keep them as non-invasive as possible. It's going to be exciting if we get a boost from this. I have about 5 Photrio projects I want to fund as soon as possible.

I'm seeing 2/3'rds non relevant ads, Kaspersky a little while ago, then B&H on entering this thread, and now at page 2, an ad from "domain.com".
Are these supposed to show up for subscribers and members?

They were starting to get more relevant but somehow my original implementation was set to USA payment method instead of NZ. Thanks to google not allowing me to change the country, I had to re-create a new adsense account and start over. I have all usergroups enabled at the moment to get some impression stats and hopefully speed up the ads becoming more relevant. That being said I'm not 100% sure they will shift to full relevancy as petapixel.com shows a lot of general ads. Photo.net seems to show a lot of relevant google ads so hopefully we'll lean that way. I am coding up a switch for subscribers to enable/disable ads but hopefully most will leave them to help us out.

I suspect that if members occasionally click on 'relevant' ads and always ignore the others, not only will the website make money, but the google ads will become increasingly relevant.

Still digging through all of the settings, I have disabled the ads relying on users web history, so maybe this will force the ads to display based on keywords of the actual page the ad is on. It might take some time for it to kick in. Any adsense gurus in here, I'm open to suggestions.

I happend to click on one of the KEH ads this morning, and it took me out of Photrio, is there a setting (on the programming side) which would cause the ad link to open in a new window or tab?

Seems it's not an option. Weird..

Generally, it is our policy to not allow Google ads to open in a new window. However, in a few markets, including China, we've found that opening ads in a new window better aligns with expected internet behavior and provides a more consistent, intuitive user experience.

Keeping in mind the importance of the user experience, we've enabled Google ads to open in new windows in locations where this is expected browsing behavior. This functionality is determined by the IP of the user, and is not an option you can select your AdSense account.

We also ask that you don't modify the AdSense ad code or alter the result of clicking on an ad on your website, as such behavior violates our program policies.

So the ads I'm getting now in the banner and left sidebar are for a music gear company I've purchased from before and on this page for a web-based ad targeting service, or maybe two different ones. Now I just noticed on the footer, there's an ad for earbuds (I don't usually scroll down to the footer intentionally).

I ended up re-enabling the systems ability to display ads based on history, mainly because without it very few ads were serving. I figured, re-enable the history and get as many ads serving as possible until the system learns 'photography' is the main audience here.

I'm researching if there are any ad networks out there other than google which are more art/photo/media oriented.

I'm investigating other ad networks than google ads. Maybe we can find something more suited to artist communities..

Just this moment I see these Google ads for the first time.

-) moving images = irritating
-) mostly non-Apug related (in case there is a subdivision within Photrio intended)

To be fair, I see the reason behind these ads.
Thus my comment above only was intended as a hint to a difference to the ads of the past.

I don't have any issue with these new advertisements, if they help us to keep this site more or less as it is, great.

Mick.

So far the return from the ads is surprising. Things are not fully rolled out and optimized yet, but if you extrapolate the numbers, it's extremely promising. I think this could allow us to have significant investment into the site. There is so much that can be done with adequate funding.

I guess I can live with a bunch of annoying random ads, though I must admit it does "cheapen" the overall Photrio experience somewhat.
It's kind of a necessary evil in this day and age. The main thing is to not have popups, pop-unders or nag screens covering what you try to read, and to keep them primarily around the perimeter of the content. This is a screenshot from petapixel, the most trafficked photoblog. On one hand it looks terrible, but I also understand they have a huge staff to pay and server to run. I've gotten used to ads on most sites, it's only the popups and annoying click bait ads "You won't believe what she looks like now" that send me running. What is bizarre is that once reputable sites are now covered in these clickbait ads "what happened next will shock you!" etc. ugh

Some of the ads are less obtrusive than others:

Hi All,

I am working on the final ad rollout now. The limited rollout was fairly successful and we also have our analog advertisers subscribing to the new analog placements (at a cheaper ad rate for them too). The best I can describe this situation is that it's a 'necessary evil' to keep us afloat and further Photrio development, and I think as with other sites we're used to these types of ads. I am trying to keep the ads as non-invasive as possible (bordering the outer edges of the site.). There are no popups, pop-unders or nag ads that halt you from viewing content. With the main rollout, ads should become more relevant in the coming weeks.

I'm looking at some coding so subscribers can disable the ads. That being said, choosing to keep them serving and to whitelist photrio.com on your adblock benefits us a great deal.

Thanks,
Sean

Thanks, the last thing we need is bunnies dancing across the screen!
