Hi,
First post

I have a good condition Canon EFS 17-55 1:2.8 lens and when I tried to sell it yesterday, to my surprise they found mould on one of the inner elements, so they refuse it.

How safe is it to clean the fungus off the lens? Are there any tips for doing this? Are there coatings that I may damage ETC.

Cheers, C.

Cleaning it may be easy or it may have etched the coating of the element.

With that lens, I'd expect a great deal of difficulty even finding what element has the problem. Getting to it might be even more difficult.

I'd sell it online while mentioning the fungus. If it's not very extensive, and you lower the price a little, someone will buy it. Include example pictures in the listing so they know it still takes good shots.

Cleaning a complicated electronic zoom lens is going to be impractical.

Hi D and L,
To me it looks like either the first or second lens from the front, and looks like it's accessible without touching the electronics.
I note that the fungus may have etched the coating.

I sold it on Ebay (before I knew it has fungus, but Ebay put a hold on paying out, until I send a photo of my licence, which is away which may take a while to return. I've returned the money and will stop uring Ebay.

If you start to take it apart, hopefully it's easy to get to the problem. But things can seem to be where they are not in a lens like that.

Hi D,
Ok,, I'll try tomorrow.
I intend to use 100% alcohol.

Spit does wonders removing fungus - it digests it 🙂

Seriously, almost anything cleans it off and nothing will prevent it from coming back.

Hi,
I used pure alcohol for the fungus, and lens cleaner to finish.
No sign of any fungus now.
Thanks, C
