Last I knew 8x10 Velvia 50 is still available in Japan; albeit not inexpensive and you need someone over there to buy/ship it for you.

You are referencing a post that first appeared in 2013.
Fast forward and observe what has happened in the interveningn time!
When Fujifilm is planning a change in its product line, specifically emulsions, it releases a Dealer Bulletin with all the changes there as facts. Petapixel is rubbish.
Instead of relying on the web and the precious activities of cashed-up photographers, seek out a pro-level dealer and ask if they have received a Bulletin from Fuji. This bulletin is also replicated on their website (sometimes in Japanese) and may give references to regional differences on the changes to their film line-up.

The current advice is to use E6 — as much as you can and to your heart's content, while it is still available.
