See this!

Peter Wigington, Fujifilm Photo Imaging Group marketing manager said: "We're seeing that inkjet- dominated clouds still have very substantial silver linings. Despite the highly successful evolution of inkjet options, the 150 year-long tradition of silver halide paper still remains a first choice for many of today's professional photographers who seek the ultimate in quality output."

He added "The real challenge is simply to educate more photographers that silver halide exists and that it is a 'peak of perfection' product available right here, right now. The fact is that silver halide offers the highest print quality attainable right now from any medium. Additionally, photographers using papers such as Fujifilm Crystal Archive have the important security blanket of print longevity. Images printed by a good lab have archival permanence and boast supreme quality."

If one would see the continuos flow of Fuji RA-4 paper still being cranked out at high speed of the processing line at a industrial photofinisher, one would hardly imagine that the output at small labs aimed at commercial photographers still would be of any significance.

So who's using it then?

What I meant is that the output of RA-4 papers at the industrial photofinishers seems the essential part.

I have never seen Fuji B&W paper nor can I find any silver paper (other than the excellent FP3000 Instant) on the website here: http://www.fujifilm.com/

With "silver paper" Fuji is refering to silver halide RA4 (color negative) papers, such as Crystal Archive and Fujicolor papers which are readily available (in rolls). Fuji B&W papers have been discontinued years ago, and I assume that even in the good ol' days they were not much more than a niche product.

cutting edge

There is a fellow in Japan that hand-makes Samauri swords exactly like his ancestors did eight generations ago. I wonder how many he can make in a year as opposed to a sushi and cooking knife factory. Do you suggest he can't make any money from such a small volume? How many people buy digital prints is besides the point. Film photography and "real" prints are now a special niche, like oil paintings and silkscreens and have a life of their own.

Sure in case of optical prints but not at all in case of laser exposed prints.

With some time to kill at the Denver airport the other day, I poked around the Mengelsen gallery. A lot of his newer stuff, squirted onto canvas looked dull and lacked detail. His older film work, printed on Fuji Crystal Archive just jumped off the wall. It was a bit sad to see the direction he's gone.

And the RA-4 colour Paper is sold in sheets. http://www.freestylephoto.biz/search?q=crystal+archive

Quite so as I would expect it to be just as Harman, Adox, Fotospeed etc do the same. What is surprising is why Kodak has decided not to sell it any longer in sheet form. If I have seen an explanation of why Kodak has abandoned its boxes of sheet paper I can only say I have forgotten what it was.

Has anyone seen Kodak's explanation on this? Thanks

Somewhere here on APUG there is a post that described the change.

As I recall it, their volumes were so low that they had gotten to the point where the cutting and packaging of sheets was subcontracted to a single, one man operation, and that individual retired. They elected not to seek out and establish an alternate relationship.

When speaking of industrial finishers one also must think of minilabs, as in parts of the world the mass-market may rely more on the latter.

In Europe Fuji themselves only offer paper in rolls.
It may be that someone converting them to sheets may use labels similar to the Fuji ones.

Are you including the U.K. in Europe? Certainly you can obtain sheets in what appear to be Fuji boxes from several retailers in the U.K. If it is a third party cutting and boxing the sheets then Fuji must have allowed it to use Fuji boxes and are happy to give the impression that it is boxed by Fuji

When do you believe Fuji stopped offering sheets?

Thanks
