For Sale FS: Yashica Mat LM in Ex++ condition with shutter problem -- $100

I just picked up this beautiful camera on fleabay because I wanted the Rolleiflex that came with it.

It's truly in great, great shape--comes with yashica metal folding lens cap, everready in great condition (though with a social security number etched lightly on the back..?)

Glass is great, finder is bright, film advances, light meter is accurate etc etc. However, the shutter won't fire at all. I've read that this can be due to a failure in the self-timer and that it is rather easy to fix, I just don't want to mess with dropping another benjamin on a CLA. I really wish this camera worked right out of the box, because I'd use it--but as it is, I'm spreading my money too thin.

Are you positive you have a shutter problem??? These models have a quirk with the shutter, they must be tested with film, as the shutter won't cock unless the internal advance mechanism is moved. Simply winding the lever will not advance the mechanism and will act as though it is broken. You can use a rewound backing paper to test.Load as though it is film and advance as normal, then when you turn the crank backward the half turn is when the shutter cocks.

Hey Rick! Thanks for responding. I just got home and tried that--the shutter still doesn't work. All I get is a very meager "click" when I press the shutter. Same as when there's not film in it.

Also, the self timer moves, but will not stay where you put it--or count down. This makes me think it's a problem with both of them.

Funny, this doesn't match my experience with Yashica-Mats. The counter will not move without film in place, yes. But the winder cocking the shutter and such without film has never been an issue for me.

But yes, the back wind to the stop is required.

Technically, the shutter is cocked on the front wind. And the same shutter cocking mechanism does go through the same motion on the back wind. What really happens of significance on the back wind is that another mechanism that locks the shutter release is 'cocked' or repositioned to where the shutter release can be activated.
