This universal iris is suited for 4x5 cameras. The board is a 4x4 from a Graphic View or maybe a Calumet but it would fit nicely on a Pacemaker Graphic board or Toyo Field or Linhoff. Minimum opening is around 3/4" and maximum is around 2 1/8".

Does this device actually hold a lens onto the lens board, as its sole support?

Yes. Its not an iris in the sense of an aperture. It's really a clamp. By way of example (note that this is a different, larger clamp on a 6x6" board):
