Cambo/Calumet 4x5 view camera and accessories for sale $325

I believe this is a used example of the Cambo SC2/Calumet NX 4x5 monorail view camera based on the presence of a revolving back, calibration scales, front and rear bi-directional bubble levels, and knob design. (The similar Calumet NX-II model is still available new on the Calumet website, but comes with a shorter bellows and monorail, and the less desirable reversing back for $1,500 without any other accessories included.)

I’m asking $325 net to me after actual insured shipping charges and any transaction fees. USPS postal money order preferred.

The used camera kit includes:

· Cambo SC2 (Calumet NX) front and rear 4x5 camera standards (w/calibration scales and zero detents)
· 21" monorail
· tripod block
· 18" bellows (light-tested for pinholes - appears OK with flashlight/darkroom test - not tested with film)
· metal lensboard w/42mm hole (cut for Copal #1 shutter)
· 360° revolving Graflok back
· Fresnel viewing lens
· Calumet 4x5 groundglass protector
· modified Graphic 4x5 film pack adapter for full-frame 4x5 wetplates
· 6-4x5 Lisco Regal II film holders (I’ll include some outdated film if I can find a box)
· Polaroid 545 film holder (obsolete, but yours if you want it)
· over-sized Calumet 47" x 59" navy/white weighted focusing cloth
· heavy-duty cable-release (missing lock)
· Calumet heavy-duty camera case (needs some foam replaced - heavy and would both simplify packing and increase the cost of shipping - yours if you want it)
· I can also include a short piece of 1" square aluminum tube stock if you'd like an alternative in addition to the Cambo 18" monorail - 11" is the standard short rail but if you want it longer or shorter, just let me know the length

There is no lens included in this package.

I’ve checked the extended bellows using the flashlight test in my darkroom and found no pinholes. The camera has some minor cosmetic flaws typical of a used camera of this vintage, but nothing that would impair any functions. However, 3 of 4 bubble levels are dry. The camera has been used but not abused. Everything moves and locks down as it should.

The Polaroid 545 holder is obsolete (unless they really do bring back type 55 via The Impossible Project). The case is heavy-duty with considerable weight that would add to shipping costs. It has many cosmetic flaws and needs some foam replaced, but has done its job well protecting the camera. I’d recommend including it but if you don’t wish to ship it or the Polaroid holder, I will ship only the desired items.

As listed above, I'll throw in a modified 4x5 Graphic film pack adapter so the camera will be ready for wetplate use as well as film if you added a lens. I probably have an old expired box of 4x5 film (no guarantees) that I could also add.

Most Cambo parts are relatively interchangeable between their various models and are found in abundance on the used market. This Cambo compatibility allows swapping out an 8x10 rear standard, back, and 8x10 bellows and leaving the 4x5 front standard and rail to give two different camera formats without having to purchase two complete cameras. A similar combination would also allow the 5x7 format. Or, as I have done, buy a longer rail and add an extra front standard and/or bellows to use long lenses or do extreme close-up photography. It is a very versatile system.

This camera folds flat with the bellows removed so it should fit in a single box long enough to accommodate the monorail length (~21") and compressed minimum bellows height (~3 inches). That will not only reduce the shipping cost if the case isn’t desired, but also makes this camera ideal for backpacking as well as studio work. It's fairly lightweight and can be assembled/disassembled in about one minute by sliding the standards off the rail and easily removing the bellows using the same mechanisms that lock the lensboard and back in place. The rail could be stuck in or along the pack (or I suppose hook-and-loop fastened or bungied to a tripod leg) with the rest of the components packed inside a small backpack. The camera can also use inexpensive 1” square extruded aluminum tube for the monorail. So, if you wanted to pack a 10”, 12”, or 14” monorail instead of (or in addition to) the standard Cambo monorail, you could do so very easily by cutting the square aluminum tube to the desired length. I can include a short length if desired. 11” is the standard wide-angle monorail length for use with a bag bellows (not included).

Complete specifications are listed in David Karp's review of the Calumet series N camera models on the Large Format Photography website.

This is a versatile camera system and I now have 3 of these Cambo cameras in my studio available for student use during wetplate workshops. I have completed outfitting my Cambo system with the desired components and I don’t need a 4th camera, so I am selling this one. It is a great camera for someone starting out using a view camera or wishing to do wetplate. With the modified Graphic film pack adapter, full-frame 4x5 plates can be made without resorting to expensive new wetplate holders, adapter backs, or other modifications that don’t allow full 4x5s to be made.

The large 162mm (6 3/8”) square metal lensboards will also allow larger, faster lenses to be used on the camera, and that is an important consideration when practicing wetplate collodion photography.

Other available system components (not included in this sale):

wide-angle bag bellows, 30” bellows, bellows support
several wide, normal, & extended monorails from 290mm to 1,000mm
recessed lensboards
supplementary front & rear standards
monocular, binocular, and reflex viewing hoods
compendium shade +/- filter holder
dual support tripod mount
extensions for front and rear standards to increase rise
CN-2 120 roll film holder

I have to retract the part about the plain 1" aluminum tube working as a monorail. Although I have read this several times, I'd never tried it before today. The Cambo standard mount is engineered so the regular 1" plain tube doesn't work. You need to use Cambo monorails.
