Hello fellow analog photographers.
I'm listing for sale my Phototherm Sidekick. I'm guessing that if you're reading this, you know what these things do, what they are, and that they're relatively hard to come by in the UK.
I'll try to be as brief but comprehensive with the information in this listing, to prevent it getting long. That said, questions are welcome.
I'm looking for £650 GBP for this. Can post it at buyers cost (think its about £40 with a courier), or the buyer is welcome to collect it, from either Macclesfield Cheshire, or Liverpool UK. I could deliver it to you within reason too.
Reasons for sale:
- I'd love to keep it, but it is taking up a lot of space in my parents garage, as I don't have the space at mine, and the last couple years, it simply hasn't got the use that it deserves (I travel a lot for work, on shoots around Europe).
- I want to stick to a more manual process — if I wanted to process automatic - there are a number of labs I'd send to and guarantee results.
- I was doing E6 with it and found it a faff to get the results that I was used to from a lab - this said despite Peter at Morco saying it was a cracking machine. So as mentioned above, staying manual. I think it could be really good a machine for someone wishing to put the work into calibrating and re-testing etc until it suits their work.
Included in the sale:

Despite it being described as a great machine, Peter pointed out a couple defects;
Thanks for looking!

Included in the sale:
- Phototherm SK4H machine with power lead.
- 2x Program chips containing different process recipes.
- Processing drum with core and 2x paterson reels.
- 120 film retainers - these are basically blinds that hold 120 film in place.
- Some tubing (not original, I had to source / buy this when I bought the machine).
- Old chemistry bottles — these came with the machine, but I bought and used fresh empty 1l bottles from FirstCall, however I am keeping some of these. The original ones, pictured, are included.
Good points
- I sent this to Peter at Morco (at the time, not sure about now?) the only Phototherm distributor in the UK a few years ago, and he said it was a very good example of a machine, good condition.
- He also tested the machine and said it works as it should do.
- In addition, I bought an extra chip, for the 4-step E6 process. So, two chips are included - one to do 7 step, the other to do 4 step. These chips also have different / extra settings for C41 and BW.
Not so good points
Despite it being described as a great machine, Peter pointed out a couple defects;
- The plastic casing holding the selector valve; the plastic has broken off that goes around one of the screws holding the valve in place. The screw and the valve still hold in place as they should. But it is something to be aware of and cautious while moving. It was like that when I got the machine and never gave me any issues though. A photo is attached where you should be able to see.
- To the front left corner of the machine, there is a hairline crack in the casing. The crack does not go right through to the inside, and is more cosmetic. Doesn't affect the function of the machine in any way. Picture of this is also attached.
Thanks for looking!
