Here's a nice little Nikon Nikomat 35mm SLR with a 50mm HC f2 prime lens and a Coligon 2x teleconverter. (Also comes with a UV filter for the lens.)

In really good condition; shutter works fine, and the speeds sound accurate to my ear. Advance is smooth; the self-timer and the mirror lock up work fine. I haven't run film through this one, so I don't know the condition of the light seals, but they don't look bad for their age.

The lens is a beauty. No scratches, marks, dust -- glass is close to perfect (it has always had a UV filter attached).

Also comes with a 2x teleconverter.

Forgot to mention -- the light meter works and there is a working battery in the body, but I have no idea whether the meter is accurate.

For those who are interested, this lens can also be easily adapted to work on modern DSLR bodies like a Canon EOS camera.

If I was a little more certain on the meter I might grab this for my son. Can you check it against other cameras or meters you have? Is it consistent or even close? Or is it pretty much jittery and inconsistent?

I just tried to test the meter outside, and the battery isn't working (I didn't have a cap on the lens). For those of you who have asked me to test the accuracy of the meter, take my advice: never trust the accuracy of a 50 year old light meter! Use a modern, handheld digital meter -- you will save money in the long run, trust me.

Thanks. For B&W even old meters in old cameras like this are usually close enough if working. My son is 11 years old and a total newb so I'd want something real simple for him than having to use handheld meter at this point, but thanks...

Good suggestion. Gave one of those to a friend I had picked up once as part of some auction package and am cursing myself over it. Also practically gave away an F3 in the past too (contribution for a contest on RFF), should have kept it for my son. I might, might, let him use my F2 or FM2!

Good luck with the sale. If I did not have a couple of Nikons already this would be a great back up or second body.

It has aperture priority auto-exposure mode, so no metering problems.
And your F2 will be save for some several years more ......

For an 11 year old kid, I think the FM3a might be the wrong camera. It's more of a collector's item than a bruise-around kind of camera. Probably a Nikon EL2 or FE would be a better choice in that respect. Something cheap and easily replaceable if it gets dropped too many times. Pair it with a 50/1.8 Series E, and it's almost as small as the FM3a/45 kit, but with a much cheaper and faster lens.

That said, if the OP's camera can be verified to have a working meter, it'd be the best kind of camera for Richard's son. Completely manual, so he can learn how to properly expose film, and fairly bulletproof. My first Nikon camera was a Nikomat FTn. Got it when I was 11.5 years old. When I sold it 10 years later, there was no corner that was angular. Every corner had been rounded due to being dropped and bumped into things. But, it still shot perfectly. It also didn't lose much value, since it was still a relatively common item (as it is today). The same could not be said about an FM3a. It might take the abuse, but, it'd quickly lose about 50% of its value by being damaged. And, parts aren't as common for it, since so few were made.

Can I verify that the meter works and that it is accuracte? As I stated earlier, I can't. However, it is a $70 Nikon, not a $150 Nikon.

Keep it all in perspective.
