Leica II (or Model D)

This is an early production Leica II from 1932, in black paint with nickel trim. It has the early-style, larger size speed dial and the so-called "toilet seat" depressed surrounding platform. Apparently intended for export ("Germany" marking in the accessory shoe plate).

As you can see in the pictures this camera is in really excellent condition. There are a few light marks on the bottom plate (difficult to photograph) and a couple of small marks on the top. The original covering has a couple of splits, one running up/down in the back and the other is partial and on one side (see pics). However, note that the covering is not loose or pulling up in these areas. You can leave it as-is for originality, or perhaps in future re-cover with a modern skin. There is minimal paint loss and it still looks very glossy. All in all, a very nice camera body!

Operationally, it is also in superb condition. The camera was serviced about 1 1/2 years ago by Don Goldberg (DAG Camera Repair) and has been used sparingly since then. It has completely new shutter curtains. The speeds are correct. The RF image is great. The film advance is firm and smooth. In other words, it works exactly as it should. I believe you'd be hard pressed to find a better operating example. Includes the take-up spool.

As a bonus, I'll also include one excellent condition Leica FILCA cassette, in case you want the full, authentic Leica II film handling experience! (The use of Leica film cassettes is not necessary, but they do work rather well).

$695 shipped within the US. Buyers outside the US, please contact me first to get an actual shipping quote.

Elmar 50mm f3.5

Also from 1932, this nickel Elmar is a perfect match for the Leica II. Distance marked in Feet. Condition is very good, especially considering its age. There are some cleaning marks up front but nothing too bad. And also the usual bit of internal dust and light haze. So it might benefit eventually from a cleaning but I have used it many times and it works fine. (Of course, all the uncoated lenses are best used with a hood). The focusing and aperture movements are both quite smooth. Comes with a Leica front cap and a generic rear cap.

$200 shipped within the US. Buyers outside the US, please contact me first to get an actual shipping quote.

Paypal is okay, prices include the fee.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

What an attractive looking camera. So steampunk in design. On the film advance.. does it stop automatically with the turn the knob? Does it have a shutter lock out after you take a picture ? or do you have remember to turn the knob to advance the film. I was always curious about that on these style of cameras.

Yes and yes. They are pure gems. A bit squinty for the viewfinder but such a joy to handle and use. I'd consider this one if I did not already have a really nice IIIf.

Yes, IF you obtain the proper case for it! Note that the Leica II, as with the earlier Leica models, has no eyelets on the sides for strap attachment. (Some II's were later retro-fitted with them by the factory). However, this is not to be seen as a deficiency. On the contrary, as this camera (especially when a small, collapsible lens is mounted) is a delight for carrying discretely in a pocket. It's tiny, even compared with the later III-series cameras.
The other thing you can do is to use one of Gordy's wrist straps, the ones that you screw into the tripod socket on the base. (I have one and have used it with this camera).

I hate to let it go but other needs dictate it…

Hello James , I am waiting my 9th Leica and I felt biggest fear with Leica was its weight and thin body. I always stressed to glide the leica from my fingers hand. I found a solution, I went to yacht store and bought from most expensive and thinnest yacht rope 1 meter. I dont know whether it was for yacht or surf board but it can carry hundreds of pounds. It was ultraviolet protected , dry felt rope and seeing it from couple of meters is difficult.
One of the seller said he will bring me original steel sphere bead leica chain for free. I never saw a strap like that but if it is Leica , it is the best.
I advise any buyer to find one of that strap or chain.

Well, this Leica II could well be your 10th Leica! Why not?!
That sounds like an interesting solution, the yacht rope. And like you, I have never seen the steel sphere bead type of Leica strap. When you receive it you should let us know how you like it.
