Kiev-2 rangefinder with 50mm f2 Jupiter-8. Film tested, good mechanicals and cosmetics; with the usual Soviet camera quirks. Uses Contax mount lenses. Serial number is 5057xx; making it 1950 production. RF patch is bright and viewfinder is clear. Lens glass is very good, with no haze or fungus. Shutter speeds seem OK at 1/125 and higher. Below that shutter is slow (might be due to lack of use). Take up spool included. Just film tested. Self timer and flash not tested. English user manual at cameramanuals.org/russian_pdf/kiev.pdf

$80 plus shipping from US zip 01886.

Edit: updated from Kiev 4a to Kiev 2

Looks like the Kiev 2, not 4a. Kiev 4a started in 1956. Only the 2 was made in 1950.

Based on this site: http://www.sovietcams.com/index5de0...2]=menu_4&tmpl_name[2]=m_menu_tree&e_id[2]=24

I believe you're right. Part of what through me off was the PC flash sync. The 2 did not have it. The 4 did, though not in the same location as on mine (I chalked that up to variations in Soviet manufacturing. The page you referenced said: The Kiev II, like the Contax II was not synchronized for flash, although many were later modified.

Here's another Kiev 2. This one shows the PC connector, presumably added, in roughly the same location as the 4. BTW, if anyone want to pay €450.00 for mine, I'll include shipping.

I've updated the title and original post.

Aftermarket shutter replacements in Kievs are common; if a shutter with sync was swapped in, it was apparently fairly common to add a PC connector somewhere for it. Not to mention this was done intentionally by users who wanted to add flash capability.

How slow are the slow speeds? You do know that a separate gear kicks in for lower speeds and sounds more draggy, right?

Tempted beyond all reason. It's a LOT safer to ponder this than cameras from Ukraine at the moment.

This is very much the case. There's a combination of factors; the curtains move slower below 1/50 as well as increasing the second curtain delay.

Film exposure (or a real shutter speed tester) are the way to be sure. OTOH, if I could spare $80 right now, we wouldn't be having this discussion; I don't like or use the meter in my Kiev 4 and have generally understood that the older models (Kiev 2 and Kiev 3) were better made than the later ones (Kiev 4, 4a, 4m, 5, etc.).

Just based on watching the shutter.

If it is a "2" t is actually more desirable (closer-to/actually the original Contax II).

But if it has flash sync, it's got a shutter from a 4 or later.

The flash synch is mounted on the top plate. This looks custom. Unless the cold shoe was swapped at some point it has to be a 2.

Oh, no question it's a 2 body -- the fold-out foot (lets the camera stand on a flat surface without a tripod, at least with a 50 or shorter lens) is the original Contax II/III type, found on the Kiev 2 and Kiev 3 (the Kiev 3 has a meter on top), deleted for the Kiev 4 (whether for ease of manufacture or to copy the Contax IIa/IIIa models, I don't know). I'm just saying the original Contax II shutter (and thus the original one in a Kiev 2) had no sync contacts, and the cost-effective way to add a PC connection and flash sync was to swap in a shutter from a Kiev 4. For as long as the Kiev 4 family was manufactured, these parts were available in the Soviet Union.

Can someone buy this already though?
I know really! I have a Kiev IIa, and I really don't need a II, but I keep comeing back here thinking, hey a II is cooler than a IIa, and may include actual Contax parts! But I really don't need it.

I don't need it. I have rangefinders that work and do their job. But like, I want it. Then again, I want just about all the cameras.

Need is a totally arbitrary concept. Look around you - I bet you see a lot of things that you don't need. What's one more?

But if it will tip you over the edge, I'll toss in a roll of HP5. Now that you need!

24 or 36?

24 or 36?

36 exp, dated 2020 but refrigerated. From the student pack.

BTW, just so no one is surprised, this is a heavy camera. Properly packed, ship weight is 3 lbs. Can ship via USPS or UPS. Also by FedEx if you have an account and send me a label.

If you make it a bulk roll then we'll talk...
