It's a crying pity that you are only offering to the US. For countries outside the USA tax would be applied on entry (in Australia, that means GST of 10% plus Customs value and import charges). Kind of lessens the appeal but somebody is going to snap this up.

It makes no difference whether an item is used or new.

Although there are enough complexities to the question (country of origin, duties, excise taxes, sales taxes, brokerage fees, etc.) to make the issue look like it requires a university degree to comprehend.

I've imported a couple of small things into the US, in order to get them to someone here on APUG. Most of the issues resolve themselves fairly simply and cheaply, but I have the advantage of being very close to a border crossing, so I didn't have to involve a shipping service until after the item was "landed".

OZ minimus is fairly high, and thus most postal shipments, even if relatively high value (1500$) usually do not incur any duty or tax. Courier shipments may have a lower tolerance and duty will be inured at a lower value, but even then, not always.

Whether it is UPS or international courier, the rule is that above AUD$1,000 it will be valued by Customs.



Old or new, it is subject to Customs valuing, thus (based on a recent purchase from USA, and goods coming from USA are being inspected and in some cases re-valued because of attempts to avoid GST):

1. Customs Value (Cv) $1,014.05 (this is the actual amount paid)
2. Customs Duty (Cd) $ 50.75 (Duty is 5%)
3. Int. Postage $ 40.60 (UPS International)
4. Value of Taxable Import (VTI) $1,105.35
5. Add 10% GST $ 110.53
6. Total paid at Customs $ 161.23

So you can see there is a higher cost to importing goods, new or used, into Australia — it won't break the bank in most cases, but many people are 'stung' by it.
Below $1,000 it will scoot through without problem, though all goods will always pass through airside cargo sorting x-ray. Food for thought...

Hi Gary is correct, I also find that UPS can sometimes charge for things lower than $1000 value, unless they changed that practice. It doesn't matter if item is used or new.

By the way, I have imported Delta 3200 (and pushed it to 6400) and I found the xrays not to be an issue. At least for 1 off scan, I'm not sure if it would be ok to do many of them...
