The 35-105 would be much larger were it the 2.8. This is the 3.5-4.5 version as you can see on the front of it in pic #5.
 
The 35-105 F3.5-4.5 makes a nice backpacking lens (or carry around). I bought my first one in the mid 80's based on the recommendation of my local camera shop owner. He actually let me borrow his personal lens for a 12-day trip I took to Isle Royale National Park. I got a lot of nice shots with that on my FM2n. The lens I bought after that trip was stolen years later, but I now have another that I bought from KEH. I still like that lens as a versatile manual focus option.
 
I've had a 35-105 (Pentax-A, macro) length on my Pentax gear. For both film and digital it is a very practical range.
