I’ve had this lens forever, I got it because I wanted a cheap Petzval style lens for the swirls etc. I’ve since upgraded and don’t need this.

It will cover 4x5 with some movements.

Balsam separation is almost non-existent and it’s been kept in a stable air conditioned environment since I’ve owned it. No mold or anything like that. There’s two small nicks in the glass (shown) which don’t affect anything.

Its a fun way to get into Petzvals without the high price tag.

$60 plus shipping.

Coronavirus free household.

Sorry Eli, I can’t. I rigged it once just to check out the coverage and see the swirl effect but then never actually did anything with it. That’s why it’s so cheap for a brass Petzval. Sorry about that.

No aperture, right? I never tried a Petval, but I could, at this price point... what’s the diameter of the barrel?

yea, no aperture.

Took photos to help. I got it at a similar price and just wanted to pass it onto someone.

No slot for Waterhouse stops, so I guess I’ll let this pass. Thanks for taking the time to measure the lens, Robert!

No worries, yea you can either add your own or use a a sinar-copal shutter, but honestly, the whole reason people love these is for the “swirl” which you don’t get if you stop the lens down. If you’re looking for deep depth, just use a regular lens. These lenses were very sharp to begin with, just had that swirl that people now want them for.

Did you use an iris lens board to mount? It certainly looks like that’s the logical choice. Thanks.

I did previously use an iris board, a Saltzman iris, I also attached it using simply a couple filter rings stacked, and screwed onto either side. It’s pretty easy to attach as it’s almost exactly the same circumference as the filter rings.

Robert,, it might help if you add an approximate Focal length and aperture, my guess is it would be most practically used on a miniature Speed Graphic or similar. F stop is Focal length divided by the lens diameter (front glass).

I am curious about this. I am also curious about the most cost effective way to use this. I have a (4x5) Speed Graphic and am interested in a barrel lens... and Petzval lenses. This fits both bills at a good price, but I am too inexperienced to know if I can use it.

It's a touch larger than my smallest Petzval which is also a projection lens. I doubt this one will cover 5x4 which is why I asked the OP the focal length, if you can use a roll film back with your speed graphic then it should cover 6x7 or maybe even 6x9.

As an example my small Petzval is 4" and approx f3 the image circle at Infinity is about 3", in use on a Magic lantern projector focus is at closer distances so it would be OK with lantern slides.

Thanks Ian. I don’t have till film holders (or even a Graflok back) so I guess I’ll pass.

It definitely illuminates 4x5

Looks to be about 8 1/2 (215mm) to the ground glass from the rear element.

215 / 60 = f/3.5
