FS: 360mm f9 W.A. APO-Nikkor in Barrel

I have two of these lenses that I have listed these lenses for sale previously, with the following in the description:

Both have some internal dust. I haven't been able to get the cells to unscrew from the barrels. If I can, it would be very easy to clean the dust off the surfaces. I'll try again within the next 24 hours, but for now the dust is there and shows up in the photos. If I can get the cells unscrewed and internal dust removed, I'll update this listing and post new photos.

After trying in vain to get the cells separated from the barrel, I decided to have them professionally disassembled and properly cleaned. The exact service I had done is called an "optical clean with mechanical detail". In addition to removing the internal dust and cleaning all exposed glass surfaces, they also cleaned the barrel, cleaned the threads to make it easier to disassemble in the future and checked for proper operation of the aperture blades.

I decided these lens are too good and offer too much coverage to languish unused because of a little dust.

Here's some more info about these lenses:

There are multiple reports in the forum of users shooting 8x20 with this lens and getting outstanding results. Multiple posters have posted that they prefer this lens over the more common 355mm G Glaron on formats up to 8x20. So, it would be a great lens on 11x14 or 7x17, with plenty of coverage.

I picked up the first lens on Saturday and it looks great. The internal dust is gone and the glass sparkles. The glass isn't quite perfect. There is one little, tiny pin prick mark on the front element, but it will have no impact on performance of this quality optic. Now that is has been serviced, it it ready to mount on your ULF camera and begin making BIG, sharp negatives.

Here's the photos of the first lens, post servicing:

This lens comes with the original front lens cap and a sightly loose fitting rear lens cap. One of the lens came mounted in a Sinar board. I offer that to the first buyer, free of charge, if you can use it.

This lens is priced at $250 + shipping. Price reduced to $225 + shipping.

Thanks,
Kerry

Hi Kerry,
Do you know what kind of shutter should I look for to use with this lens? I'd be tempted..

Hi Kerry,
Do you know what kind of shutter should I look for to use with this lens? I'd be tempted..

It's not a direct fit into any standard shutter. There is a photo of one mounted in a Copal No. 3 shutter on the SK Grimes web site, as well as mention that it can be mounted in Ilex/Betax/Acutex No. 4 or an Ilex No. 5 shutter, but these all require custom machine work, on top of the cost of the shutter.

My recommendation would be to use it with a behind the lens shutter like a Packard or, better still, a Sinar shutter. If you can adapt a Sinar shutter to the front of your camera, they are the perfect solution for using with barrel lenses. One shutter for as many barrel lenses as you want.

Is this from a vertical process camera? Should have a huge image circle. .I have a WA Claron but only 270mm. Man with a Packard shutter that would make a great lens for 8x10, 11 x 14 . Looks really nice.
Best Mike

Mike,

Yes, it's a wide angle process plasmat (6/4 construction). The official rated coverage was 54 degrees for an image circle of 730mm at 1:1, but that is for demanding photo engraving applications. There are several reports in the forums of users using this lens on formats up to 8x20 or 14x17 (and preferring it over several other more "famous" lenses). Supposedly, it won't quite cover 12x20, but is very sharp up to 8x20/14x17.

OK, I picked up the second lens yesterday. It has also been disassembled and received a professional cleaning (optical cleaning and mechanical detail). All the internal dust has been removed and the glass sparkles (just look at the photos). As mentioned above, these 360mm WA APO Nikkors cover formats up to 14x17/8x20 and are very sharp and contrasty. Many prefer them over the more common, and highly regarded G Clarons on these formats. In the original barrel mounts, they have 12-bladed apertures, for a nice round opening for a very pleasant rendering of out of focus areas. These were very expensive wide angle process lenses for vertical process cameras when new and make really great ultra large format taking lenses at very affordable prices on the used market.

This second one is missing two trim pieces around the front barrel. These trim pieces are for cosmetic purposes only and their absence does not impact functionality in any way.

Here's some photos of the second lens:

This one comes with a non-original (Rodenstock) front cap and no rear cap.

It was expensive to get these lenses professionally cleaned and they come with a six moth warranty from my repair technician. I hope someone whill take advantage of this service and start using these lenses to make beautiful ULF images.

I just dropped the price on the first one to $225 + shipping and this one is $175 + shipping.

Thanks,
Kerry
