For Sale FS: 19" RD Artar w/Ilex 5 Adapter

This hasn't gotten used for a while, so out it goes.

Included in this offering are: a 19" Red Dot Artar, a blackened brass adapter to front-mount the lens into an Ilex 5 shutter, and a leather lenscap. No shutter is included.

This 19 inch Red Dot Artar is in very good shape - clean glass with an easy-moving iris. I'm sure if you look closely enough, you'll find a cleaning wisp or two, but you'll will have to look close. I've used this lens in the past on the 12x20, so there's plenty of coverage for smaller formats. I never got around to mounting the cells into an Ilex 4, since all my 4's are non-functional. I front-mounted it into an Ilex 5, instead. Comes with a nice leather lenscap, with red liner, that I made for it.

I use a 19" Artar the same way on an Ilex 5 that I have from my 10" WF Ektar, and I seem to have accumulated quite a few lenses that use this same thread, including a 12" Gold Dot Dagor and a B&L Tessar of around 8.5" so whoever buys this might find that the adapter works on other lenses.

Thanks for the info, Dave. I don't know what other lenses might fit into the adapter - cross your fingers and you might win the lottery.

The threads on the adapter and lens are: 2.475" - 2.516" at 26 TPI.

Sorry to disappoint, but the threads on your Kodak version of the Ilex 5 are different from the "standard" Ilex 5. It won't work.

Even if the lens doesn't fit whatever shutter you have, it's still a bargain. They're wonderful lenses. S.K. Grimes can make whatever adapter you need. I had mine mounted in a Copal 3. It's the best large format lens I own.

OK, folks - a little moral guidance, here, please. I'd love to hear that I've done the right thing.

As you can see above, John expressed a desire to buy this lens yesterday. I emailed him yesterday, asking for his address to calculate the postage, and he responded this afternoon. Like 99.9% of APUGers, I'm sure John's an honest, straight-up guy. I beleived he would certainly purchase the lens. Here's my problem: I originally listed this lens on LFF, then later here on APUG. When it didn't move immediately at a price I considered a bargain, I went ahead and listed it on eBay. Earlier this afternoon, somebody used the eBay Buy It Now feature, and immediately paid for the lens. Since from time to time, someone who's expressed an interest in buying something from me has changed their minds, I had decided not to pull the eBay auction until after receiving payment. I feel terrible for disappointing John, but I think I've done the correct thing, as far as the eBay buyer is concerned.

What's the collective thinking on this kind of situation?

Well, personally, if I move something to eBay after a reasonable period of it not selling here, I announce that fact in a comment to the original thread, so that APUG members have a chance to get a bargain from another APUG member, but at that point, once it's up for auction, it's up for auction. I'm not sure how to resolve this situation, but I think the problem stems from not announcing that the item moved to auction.

I did that once, and only once, here. I announced the auction and, in a feeling of community loyalty, stated that if a forum member wished to purchase the item at the price listed on APUG, I would honor that price, even if the as yet unended auction had brought a higher bid. I was soundly criticized by several members for the effort. You graciously pointed out to the complainers that I had not broken any rules. I vowed not to mention "that auction site" again.

As I said, I feel terrible about the situation, but reasoned, at the time, that the first one to complete the transaction deserved the item. In an email to John, I explained that had another buyer appeared on one of the forums, I would have informed them that there was a prior potential buyer. Alas, that's just not possible with eBay.

You are ok in my book, you did nothing wrong. I go with who ever get me the money first. I list things here and LFF and try to give the community a chance to get first picks. If that doesn't happen, off to ebay it goes. In this case, I would say the community had more than enough time. If people get all bent about ebay, well too bad. They can take their business else where. Oh I could go on and on, but you are all right in my book.

If it went to the first person who could complete the transaction successfully, that's probably the best resolution in this case. Sorry about the flak from the membership on your previous ad. Often people don't realize that different forums have different rules and norms about these things. Some forums are very strict about not mentioning eBay, hence all those references to "that auction site." We're okay with it, as long as APUG isn't being used just to promote eBay auctions, and APUG members get a reasonable chance to purchase the item directly before it goes to eBay.

So just to reiterate for those who are following: If something is posted here first and doesn't sell after some reasonable interval, like a week, and the seller moves the item to eBay, it's okay to post a link to the auction as a comment on the existing ad thread. What's not ok is to post a link to eBay as the first post in a new thread or to promote one's own auctions in the general forums outside of the classifieds section.

Jason: Thanks for speaking up. It seemed harsh to apply what I call Craigslist Rules, i.e., fastest $$$'s wins, to a forum listing, but then again, as per the Corleone Credo, "It's business. Nothing personal".

Dave: Your patient, steady hand has calmed many an unpleasant situation. I realize now that I could have avoided this trouble by informing John, in my email, of the eBay auction and the need for decisive action. I regret not doing so.

Like you, I was at a loss to see a solution that would be more equitable to everyone. I've had an idea that assuages my conscience a bit, and I hope would be sweet tea to John, who may have a bitter taste from the incident. A unique feature of my listing was the Ilex 5 adapter. I've emailed John to say that if that feature was one which motivated him to purchase, then he should acquire another 19" RD Artar, and I would make him an adapter for free.

I feel that "older" members here have an obligation to newer members to show the friendly and helpful nature of the forum. I would hate to think that John would feel abused in a place that was full of cutthoats. We have no idea what knowledge and talents he brings.

Meanwhile, we're working on an update to the classifieds rules just to make clearer practices that have become routine and ward off a few issues that have been mentioned in this thread.
