He's got an old Soviet rangefinder and is looking to get an all-manual Nikon body (he has a couple old lenses) and so he needs a cheap light meter.

I figure someone used would be good for him, but I don't know what's good and what isn't in the world of lightmeters.

Thanks, APUG. Long time no see (I defected. I miss this community).

Gossen LunaPro SBC or LunaPro F, or the Minolta meters are good. If you look around in the recent posts in this section, I think there is a link to a free iPhone light meter application.

You can usually find Weston meters quite cheaply on ebay.

Skip the relics. Also keep in mind that working meters aren't necessarily accurate meters. If money is tight, look into a Sekonic L-398M. They're usually available on the big auction site in good shape for 60-80 bucks if you're patient. Sekonic 318, 328, and 308 models are newer, digital readout models that are a bit pricier.

‘Skip the relics’ Gosh that was a bit cutting……. Weston meters are hardly relics, as the last was made around 2001 (Euromaster) but I suppose at 60 I am of the old school and want well engineered metal cased items that last more than a couple of years. Each to their own.

If making a retro fashion statement matters, get a Sekonic L-398A--lots of Norwood DNA with new, warranteed innards.

I have a Gossen Sixtino I'll let go cheap. Incident or reflected modes, still accurate.

I have two older light meters that I'll let go for pretty cheap price.
A GE model 8DW58Y5 and a Weston Master IV. Both have cases.

Let me know if he's interested.
