I was gifted this really nice Yashica Electro 35 GS. Unfortunately it only seems to fire at 500th of a second and bulb, even with a new battery installed.

I spent quite a few days doing research on this camera, first to get a battery to fire it up, and secondly to figure out why it wasn't working properly.

It seems the POD (pad of death) has disintegrated, and it is not allowing the camera to properly reset the shutter in between windings. I have a functioning Yashica MG-1 to use as a comparison. There needs to be an audible "clunk" just as you stroke the film winder to the next frame to reset the spring inside. If you have no clunk, you have to replace the POD. Here is a link on the whole thing:

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

With the battery installed, the over and under lights work fine. The self timer works, the winding is smooth (minus the clunk). It looks to be a camera that was seldom used.

The seals will probably need to be replaced as well.

Anyway, if you help me with postage, you can take this camera off my hands.

I work second shift, so if you email or PM me through the afternoon, I won't be able to answer back till late tonight or tomorrow morning.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, if no one absolutely needs this camera from you, I would love to take it off your hands. I live in Australia and won't be able to get my hands on any money until Monday but, again, unless there's someone out there camera-less and needing this, if you let me know how much postage will be required to 'unburden' you I'd be more than happy to help you out there!:D

The Tele set is worth some bucks...and if you want the perfect person to get the whole kit working as new, give Mark Hama a try (www.markhama.com)...he's fantastic...I've had several older rangefinders worked on by Mark...and he's actually given me a call a couple of times on my cell phone to let me know the progress and what was needed. It's a shame to let these great old rangefinders go to the grave. Especially the Yashicas...I have several that are still really fun to do street shooting with. Good luck with the sale (I know, I should just say GLWTS...but I'm old and I still do things the old way)...cheers to all...Ron J.
