I sold the trunk case that came with my Nikon 800mm f/5.6 lens and bought this case (backpack) instead:

Yes, it's a really heavy-duty case / bag / backpack that provides as much protection as I would want for a large, heavy lens when I'm carrying it myself or transporting it in a car. I wouldn't ship it or check it as baggage, however.

There isn't enough room to leave a camera body attached to an 800mm f/5.6 lens, but the original trunk cases don't have room either.
