Thanks for posting. I love those early F1 photographs as well. I'm surprised they didn't include any photos by Jesse Alexander, one of the most famous of motorsports photographers.

Are you for certain none of his were in this set? I wonder if there was some licensing challenges..

I may be wrong, but I didn't see him credited anywhere in the article.

I hope they did use his images. It’s weird the BBC didn’t credit any individual photographers

Those were the days, when you could stand two feet away from the cars/drivers and shoot photos.

I have a silver print on my wall of a photo that my father took at Mosport Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario sometime in the '70s. The photo is of Brazilian race car driver Carlos Pace sitting in his F1 car in the pits, with a mechanic standing alongside the car. According to my father, he told someone he was with the press and they believed him and let him in (he wasn't 😉 ). Security was clearly pretty lax in those days. He must have been standing no more than three feet away from the car when he took the shot. Oddly and unexpectedly, I somehow fell into a project beginning in 2019 documenting vintage racing at Laguna Seca Raceway and find myself taking pictures of similar cars in similar settings. Luckily, the paddock at Laguna Seca is open to the public so access is very good. Still, I'd love to be able to stand just feet away from the drivers/cars at an F1 race and take photos of the action up-close.

I must dig out my photos made at the British F1 GP in 1970. It was partially sponsored by the Wool Mart, and a friend's father had two complimentary Grandstand tickets. The other brother and I were on the inside.

Those were the days, when you could stand two feet away from the cars/drivers and shoot photos.

Yes, we could freely roam feet away from the track itself, amazingly there were no restrictions. Jackie Stewart had been leading, then had a puncture, after a tyre change quite slow by modern standards, he came out last only to fight back to 2nd place.

I’ve been a Formula 1 fan since I was a kid.
Love looking back at the old photos of the early days.
Sterling Moss having a cup of tea in the car , saucer, spoon and all.
The thing I always saw with Sterling Moss was you could always recognize him driving even if you couldn’t see his face; just the way he sat in the car.
I have my own personal Sterling Moss story that I will never forget.

Thanks for posting this.
