North America. Creosote was the standard traditional preservative for all kinds of outdoor wood applications,
not only railroad ties but fenceposts, telephone poles, etc, pretty much everywhere, until is was replaced mainly by pentachlorophenol and chromated copper arsenate (both are even more hazardous). All of those are now banned.

In recent years the smoke from our massive brush fires has been especially noxious due to all the naturally occurring creosote involved. There are no doubt analogous forms of vegetation involved in the recent big fires around the Med. in Europe. Vaughn, being a forester, would understand. Maybe mustard goes well with grilled ground squirrel or badger, or something like that.

Ironically, my horse liked to chew creosote treated posts while flirting with his girlfriend mare across the fence on the neighbor's property, likewise chewing from her side. It ended up as wooden balls suspended from the barbed wire (and a big repair chore for me). The creosote would have been thoroughly outgassed - some of those posts were over a hundred years old. Some of the remaining cedar posts were ruined by woodpeckers.

...

Especially nice on grilled Spotted Owl breasts and Marbled Murrelet wings...or so I have been told.

Indeed. To evade the Fish & Game authorities, it has been customary to use spot remover on the feathers first, before grilling an unplucked owl on a stick. Perhaps Farmer's Reducer would work.

The level of para-Formaldehyde in say Kodak D-85 is so low 0.75%, and para-Formaldehyde itself has a very ow odour compared to Formaldehyde. So don't over think things.

As an ex Biological Sciences' student, I had to dissect specimens preserved in Formaldehyde, Lith developers have almost no smell in comparison. Here in the UK each medical student was given a cadaver, so they had heavy exposure to Formaldehyde. These days they share them.

So there's a need for realism.

Ian

A few years ago I was required to dispose of some biological specimens that were preserved in 40% formaldehyde solution. I sought expert advice before doing this which did involve a fume cupboard, decanting into new containers and massively diluting.

Once it was under 10% it was permissible to wash it down the drain with plenty of water. Again in the fume cupboard.

I should think 0.75% is barely noticeable, though it's certainly good practise to avoid any vapours from open containers and to seal bottles tightly shut when not in use.

Heh, heh ... When Ian states he is an EX-Biology student, does that imply he is writing that posthumously?
