Why do we have to make a decision? Both.

Innately a photograph documents what the lens sees and therefore has integrity. Add or remove something significant to express something that does not exist and the photograph loses its integrity.

Expression. Whatever I photograph, I am trying to convey it as I see it. Sometimes it borders on documentation, but it always expresses my own bias.

You don't have to, the poll is set up so that you can select both answers.

Both really. I connect with photography on multiple levels. For me it's mostly because I just love to get out and do it. And I love fiddling with the gear, admiring the feel and look of the craftsmanship that went into building my mostly classic collection of cameras. And lastly, the euphoria in my mind and the adrenaline rush I feel when looking at the end result when it works is like crack cocaine to me.

Thank you. I did just that.

hi mark

for me it is the same, it is a document of a form of expression.
it is a photograph showing a record of a person, place, think, or what i did
and the "what i did" might be make a photograph of a tree or a person or
the results of how the sun recorded the refracted light of a glass or bottle or glasses onto paper.

''It's a generous medium, photography'' [Lee Friedlander]. For me it's definitely both.

It is a form of expression. I do not worry about integrity at all - I concentrate on producing great art.

An exception when I am working as a naturalist - I take photographs of insects to verify identification so then purely documentation.

In the Zen sense, I would have to say documentation. But if others read expression, then that is not intentional.

90% expression, 10% documentation.

I've been a photographer for more than sixty years, I often think I must take them out of pure masochism.

Your words: You have no integrity? What have you no scruples either?

Not my words at all. You have edited what I wrote and then taken it out of context.

In a context of photography, I do not worry about integrity. Not the same thing at all.
In a context of living, I have more integrity than you do as I do not edit other people's words to pretend they said something they did not.

Photography documents, it is a factive medium, and the expressive consequences of that documentation have a native intensity and authenticity not matched by fictive media like painting or drawing or electronic picture-making.
