focussing screens

Hello everyone
I just got myself a zeiss lens and I have seen in a lot of different places people saying split prism etc are better for manual focus.
I use the eos 1v and want to know if it would server me better to use a different screen?

What focal length lens? Split is mostly useful for wide angle.
