For Sale Focomat 1c 35mm enlarger- P/U only in LA area

hey guys,

This is sad day for me... Letting go, but embracing the future! I bought this enlarger with full intention of using it, but it simply has not happened. Its taking up space, and since its not being used(which it should be), I feel its time for it to go to a good home. However, I'm not comfortable shipping it. Yes, they're built like tanks, but there are a lot of delicate parts to these machines, parts that are hard to replace!

This is a fully working, earlier(shortneck bulb) model w/o the filter drawer. It has the Focotar 5cm lens(not the II model), has the glass carrier(no A/N ring for the condenser however), and a fully working original bulb. Fully working unit. NO EASEL THOUGH.

Looking for $250 cash, pickup in person. I'm also open to delivering it up to 15mi from Glendora, CA(57/210 freeway interchange)

Normally, I would not do this, but I have come to hold my fellow APUGer's in high respect. So, I can not hold my tongue any longer.

This past February, I came across and elderly lady that was selling some old darkroom stuff for cheap. This enlarger was one of those items. (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

Now, I know I may get some run for this post, but I will have to deal with that. Daniel was given this enlarger by me for the cost of shipping (which included the extremely heavy easel he is not including in his sale) and packing materials + a open box of Efke 4x5 film that turned out to be fogged and unusable. After asking him for something in trade, this is all he had outside of a couple of beakers and old developing trays I didn't need. He was then informed that I had an offer from an APUGer that was willing to pay shipping, packing materials + $150. He convinced me he was a poor college student, had nothing else to offer and using his B-Day money for the shipping cost. But he REALLY wanted it. Since the elderly lady REALLY wanted to see this go to someone in need and it cost me little money, I turned down the other offer and sent it to Daniel. I know I made the deal and if I am not happy about it, it is my own fault, which is why I never said anything when he turned around and started listing all kinds of gear for sale on these class ads as well as LFF site. But this is just too far. I spent hours building a custom double wall box for safe shipping, completely rewired the unit from front to back, cleaned it all up, and wrote up assembly instructions with numerous pictures to ad him in getting it back together. All, because I am also generally poor and in need of kindness, other APUGer's have helped me in need and the lady loved the story about her enlarger. I have no problem with him trying to regain his shipping cost, but without that giant easel, that would be around $60 at most. The enlarger itself, Dan, was GIVEN to you for FREE even though I paid money for it. The least you could do is return the favor and pass it on to the next enthusiast in need, with the same fashion.

Yes Jody, I did get it from you. I'm sorry you felt I cheated you. I did not mean it at all in that regard. I was merely stating the facts of my financial strains at the time of purchase to you(which are still here at the time of writing this, hence this "sale"). You were willing to give it to me, and I thank you for that! There aren't very many generous people such as yourself who are willing to do so these days! That's something to be admired! However, you decided to give it to me, rather than selling it to someone else. You decided to do that, and cannot hold me responsible for that decision. I DID NOT LIE TO YOU. I'm not a "starving" college student, but I'm not exactly "rolling in cash" either . Like many I imagine on this forum, in these strained times financially(at least for myself), I've been re-assessing current and future purchases/decisions to streamline my workflow and chosen methods of output. Because of lack of time currently, and lack of space to set up even a makeshift darkroom, I cannot use this enlarger at this time, and would like myself to also see it go to a good home.

So yes, I'll admit that I paid $150 to you for it. Full disclosure on that one. Full disclosure. The shipping was top-rate, and I couldn't have asked for a smoother transaction! The re-wiring works perfectly, and here's another "tip of the hat" from myself to you on having much better wiring/electrical skills than I .

So in light of the fact that my "purchase" price on this fine piece of kit has been bared to the world by a prior owner, I'll drop it down to below my purchase price in good faith. I HAVE researched shipping costs for this enlarger, and with sufficient(most likely excess, since I like making sure things are perfectly safe) padding, shipping via UPS Ground would be close to $100 insured(I would not ship it uninsured). This is the quoted price from my local UPS store, upon dimensions for a suitable(again, probably excess in size, but again, for safety) box and professional packing from the UPS Store employees.

NEW Price is now $100 picked up from me.

So at this time I'm looking to sell it for less than a "break even" price. In good faith to you, and the others on this forum who are reading this thread.

I am NOT looking, and certainly NOT WANTING to get into a pissing match with anyone. We are here on the forum to support each other in our art/hobby, and I believe that arguing doesn't help. Yes, disagreements will happen(as in this case). However, I'm 100% sure I'm not the only person here or on any other forum who has bought something to end up selling it again. In my case, it is NOT my intention to re-sell it anytime soon(or even attempt to "break even" price-wise), but to use it like it was intended to. Sometimes that happens faster than others, sometimes I might own something for years before realizing it needs a new home.

I'm sorry you feel this way, and I completely understand where you're coming from. I hope that this sale(which hasn't found a new owner yet) won't affect further sales by myself, or your opinions of myself or my actions. I consider myself an upstanding person through and through, I was merely trying to make a little bit of money on this transaction to help get my younger brother started with his photography(sports shooting) business he wants to start upon graduation at the end of this school year(he's a senior in h.s.).

I have purchased a LOT of equipment(and have been given some too) over the past few years, much of which I'm now re-selling to focus on using a few select tools. I'm sure I'm not the only one looking at their pile(literally in my case ) of cameras/DR equipment and thinking about selling off the unused bits. That's what I'm doing, and will continue to do as the "weeding" continues.

So... I guess my a$$ has been bared to the cold north wind!

I also have no intension of getting in a pissing match and would not be replying to this at all except you seem to refuse to understand the nature of this situation.

You use phrases here like "I paid $150 to you for it", "my "purchase" price on this fine piece of kit has been bared to the world by a prior owner", and "bought something to end up selling it again".

You did not pay "Me" anything, you did not "purchase" this kit, and you did not "buy" something you are now re-selling. You "paid" the US postal service $110.00 for shipping it from Florida to California and most of that cost was due to the massive easel that was something like 1 1/4" thick wood base and metal. You then reimbursed me $40 for the specialty double wall cardboard I built the box out of and other packing materials.

I did not own this unit until people started showing interest. I then went and paid the lady $30 for it because I told her I found someone that would like to have it. When I spoke with her later that month and told her the story that I sent it to a poor college student in need, she tried to give me the $30 back. I did not take it. This is why this class ad offends me so much. If I were worried about feeling "cheated" I would have spoken up the week after I shipped it to you. I did not, because as I said, "I" made the deal and sometimes they don't go as well as liked.

Again, I have no problem with you regaining your shipping cost, but I do think you should consider that you are not including the heaviest part of that cost.
