IE is there a formula that is unsensitive to x-ray radiation so as be able to pass through x-ray machines without being damaged?

The funniest thing in this case:

- Terrorists and terrorist suspects are banned from flying.

- The authorities were warned, but failed and allowed that guy to go aboard.

In the end, it's good for the environment - less people will fly.

I just love the "You can't get up in the last hour of the flight" rule.

Today I just flew from Los Angeles to Baltimore and when I asked I was told that it only applies to international flights not within the US.

I would say the best bet would be to buy your film here and have it processed here, and shipped back to you, or ship it back to your home address via mail. If you aren't staying near a good photo shop, you can have the film shipped to your hotel or wherever else you are staying. All pro labs offer shipping services.

As it turned out, I shipped all my film except what was in the camera back to Texas. I'm sure that all my roll film would have been fine to take on...the boxes of sheet film labeled DO NOT OPEN and wrapped in aluminum foil might have been a little suspicious. They did pull my aside, as always, to re-exorcise my cameras. It was the 1940s era folder that was possessed this time. O well. Now I'm bored and have to wait till next week to start developing.

I'm flying to US from UK in January for photo trip so this is of interest to me too. I would normally carry 150 to 200 rolls Ilford FP4 120 but will now buy a lot of this over there and have processed locally where possible.

I have asked Virgin, Delta and US TSA (Transport Security) for advice on what to do and so far just received reply from Virgin:

'From 26 December 2009 additional security measures have been put into place for all flights going to the US. This includes extra screening of passengers and hand baggage at the gate immediately before boarding.

In order to minimise delays and congestion we are asking all passengers to arrive at the gate early. Hand baggage allowances for all passengers flying into all US airports has been reduced to only one item of hand baggage. This item should not exceed 23 x 36 x 56cm, (approx 9 x 14 x 22 inches) and 13lb/6kg in weight, and should only contain the items you need during the flight.

In the light of above, you may carry film rolls as part of hand /hold baggage. However, it is advisable you inform the check in staff that you are carrying film rolls to avoid damage.'

This isn't exactly definitive but implies they will allow film as hand luggage.

Just received a reply to my email to US TSA about taking film onto plane as carry on. Looks like bottom line is no change, hand searches are still available and film can go on plane as hand luggage.

Your problem is flying to the US, UK airports scan everything and it'll depend on the UK airports policy as to the hand luggage allowance as there are/were increased restrictions gor US flights. There's no hand inspections.

Yes, you're right. I have always had to put my FP4 through the hand luggage x-rays as I leave the UK and I have stopped doing internal UK flights to link with overseas flights to avoid extra x-ray exposure to film. This time I will buy most of my film in US and have delivered to where I will be in Colorado. I will try and take some film onto plane as hand luggage to get me started with some night shots in New York after we arrive. My camera gear usually comes with me as hand luggage too but I have just bought a rigid Peli case to put it in the hold. Will have to keep fingers crossed they don't lose it! Dave

NYC to Denver with 50+ rolls of 120, and all they asked was that I take the cameras out of the bag, similar to laptops. Quite polite, especially by Newark Airport standards . . . .

I just flew from Columbus to Philly. Security was exactly the same as it has been for the past year. Though they always scan my camera twice. Apparently it shows up as an impenetrable mass on the machine.
