I bought a box of the Fuji Universal C-41 & Pro6 Fixer to use with my E-6 development. The instructions show dilution and times for using the fixer for both E-6 and C41. I am running out and was wondering if I could use flexicolor fixer as a universal fixer as well, for both c41 and e-6? what would the dilution be for e-6? fuji says for e-6 dilute 1+9 and for c41 1+4. would the flexicolor be similar?

any thoughts?

thx

john

I would be very surprised if these two were different products. I am a bit surprised that they recommend such a high dilution for E6 - is this for E-6 single shot use vs. replenished C-41 ?

You can use C41 Flexicolor fixer as a universal fixer, yes. It's even usable for B&W film and paper, with stronger dilution than for C41 (e.g. 1:2 or something I think. PE has posted about it here before.).

In a pinch I've used rapid fix for color film and to make blix for RA4. In a pinch.

Heinz Anderle posted Fuji's E6 formulas here. Photo Engineer posted Kodak's C-41 formulas here. Kodak's C-41 fixer uses about 124 g/l ( = 214 g * 58%) pure Ammonium Thiosulfate, whereas Fuji's E-6 fixer uses 80 g/l, that's a bit more concentrated that a 1:1 dilution of Kodak's C-41 fixer. This would suggest, that you should use the Flexicolor fixer only at 1+6 or 1+7 for E6 work.

thanks. ill give it a try with an older roll of 35mm velvia and see what i get.

thanks to all for your replies. with freestyle now selling kodak flexicolor and other kodak color liquid chems, and being in CA, shipping liquids is now much cheaper. only $7 to ship vs $37 from unique
