WHAT IS THIS?! What do you call it, and how do you fix it? I have struggled with these marks for months now, and I think its about time a real solution appears before I switch to digital forever. I Will usually just adjust the negative's position in the holder, but focus never seems to be just right.

Does anyone know what I mean?

those are called Newton rings and are very common and caused by contact between the film and glass

Newton rings

Scanning is such a pita I have already switched to digital forever as you say. Forever is relative to how long till I have the money for a Flextight though.

For about 10-years, I've used a trick that has eliminated Newton's rings so far. I went to the glass store and had them cut two sheets of anti-glare picture frame glass to a size that fits on my scanner. I put the slightly frosted side of the glass towards the negative - one beneath the negative and one on top. The bottom glass raises the negative to the proper height for focus, the top sheet flattens the negative. I don't use the carriers that came with my scanner.
