I just bought this camera and I would like to do some flash photography. Can I go all the way to 1/500 got flash sync on the leaf shutter or should I use a lower speed?

Electronic flash will sync at all speeds, bulbs, if any exist anymore, will not, only at 1/30 with M class bulbs.
Owner manual available free from butkus.org for more information on the camera.

A lower speed than 1/500 with have more background light (and risk of motion). Make to sure to set the flash coverage to "35mm" or "40mm."

You can sync at any speed. And as pointed out use a wide angle setting or better bounce off a white card.

Just because, you can test if the sync is working. It is possible for sync to go out, connections to break, etc. Might as well be sure before running film. Connect the flash, open the back and look through the lens from the back. Point both the flash and camera towards a white wall or such. Fire the shutter. You should see the flash through the lens.

Do not point the flash AT the lens when doing this.
